Does an apple a day really keep the doctor away?

An apple a day keeps the doctor away you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn't heard that saying before. But is there any truth to it?

More than a thousand years ago, the ancient Britons were already talking up the apple's medicinal qualities. This proverb from that era, translates as
"eat an apple before going to bed, make the doctor beg his bread."

It certainly would be great to spend your money on apples rather than health insurance. Unfortunately, an apple a day will not keep you totally disease free, but there is some evidence that it can help.

Scientists have done many studies looking for a specific chemical in apples that could prove this old adage. Quercetin, a polyphenolic compound (polyphenols are the antioxidant compounds found in red wine), is the compound most referenced for its curative properties. Quercetin was found to help in lung and prostate cancer and to reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease. Apples also contain other antioxidant compounds and fiber.

The humble apple has large quantities of flavonoids, which help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Eating just two a week can even cut your chances of getting asthma by as much as 32 percent.

The peel has the highest proportion of these antioxidants (almost five times greater), so definitely don't skip the peel. There has also been some research that has found that apples help in fighting Alzheimer's and breast cancer.

  • Apart from the core, you really should eat the whole apple because two-thirds of the good stuff is in the peel.
  • Did you know that apples are great at satisfying our need for mid afternoon munchies? Apples have lots of fibre, and fibre hits the fullness switch, which means your stomach won't start rumbling again until dinner

I usually hate apples... but this thread convinced me, I swear... mafi a7la menel so7a bel dene... yalli ma 3ando perfect health.. has nuth... but I have one question about the apple thing... Do u think that eating an apple @ night has more n better effect than eating it in the mornin'?

Whether you eat the apples during the day or at night doesn't make any difference as far as weight gain ... but usually most of digestion occurs at night when u sleep ...
however if you eat apple during the day, it will satisfy your needs to eat "junk" or "sweet" foods ... but the effect is the same regarding nutritional value ...

يقولون ان تناول تفاحة يوميا يغنيك عن زيارة الطبيب ولكن تناول طبق من الخضراوات من المحتمل ان يحارب الاصابة بمتاعب الذاكرة عند الهرم.فقد اكتشف باحثون اميركيون ان المسنين الذين يتناولون ما لا يقل عن 2.8 طبق من الخضراوات يوميا يتباطأ لديهم فقدان الذاكرة وتدهور اخر في القدرات الذهنية بنسبة 40 في المئة على مدار ست سنوات بالمقارنة بأولئك الذين يأكلون أقل من طبق واحد يوميا.

وقالت مارثا كلير موريس من المركز الطبي لجامعة رش في شيكاجو في محادثة عبر الهاتف "انها اخبار مشجعة للغاية قد تساعدنا في الاحتفاظ بقدراتنا المعرفية مع تقدمنا في العمر." ودرس فريق البحث 3718 شخصا في شيكاجو عمرهم 65 عاما فأكثر أوضحوا في استبيان ما يأكلونه كما خضعوا لاختبارات لقياس قدرات ذهنية مرتين على الاقل اثناء فترة الدراسة.

وفي المتوسط فان اولئك الذين كانوا يتناولون الكميات الاكبر من الخضراوات ذات الاوراق الخضراء مثل الخس والسبانخ سجلوا اقل فقدان للذاكرة. وجاء في المرتبة الثانية من كانوا يأكلون خضراوات صفراء مثل القرع وخضراوات اخرى مثل القرنبيط.وقال الباحثون في الدراسة التي نشرت في دورية علم الاعصاب ان البقوليات كالفول السوداني والعدس لها التأثير الاقل كما ان تناول الفاكهة بانتظام لم يعط اي تأثير واضح.
