Portable HD problem

Guys for some reason when i plug in my portable HD into my pc it says unidentified device and i can't browse it, i opened the box of the HD removed the head and returned it and still same problem, i have the hitachi HD boxed with the i-ways box, anyway i am tired of this peice of S**t i am buying a WD passport but the question is can i recover the files from it somehow? or at least see them to see if that are backed up on my stationary HD (not the pc one another one for backups) cz the thing is that i forgot what files are on my portable one :D... so anyway to fix this? ps: the problem is definetly from the portable HD and not the pc i have checked :)

thanks in advance :)

Re: Portable HD problem

Solutions concerning PC or OS issues:
1-Plug the HD on another PC or just on another OS.
2-Use an OS-live CD or an OS Bootable Flash Drive. Load it, and mount the HD drive and see_files/copy_files/blablabla ...

Solutions concerning Hardware issues:
1-When you encounter something called "Unidentified Device", it can be that the USB cable (mid-cable or end-cable) is not good. So try another one...
2-It might be that the HD is Fu**ed Up! So try putting it in the refrigerator for 3-4 hours... and after you take it from the kitchen (assuming the refrigerator is in the kitchen :P), directly plug it into your PC and try it...

Solutions concerning Driver issues:
Try:
1-Installing the hardware driver.
2-
reinstalling the hardware driver.
3-Try Installing the newest driver available for this hardware.
4-Check the online customer support (If there any :P).

Good Morning Mate.
My Friend Faced The Same Problem And The "Dumb" Windows OS Wasn't Able To Mount His External Hard Disk.. I Will Tell You What I Did With Some Explanation..
All What You Need Is An Ubuntu Desktop Linux Burned On CD (Because Ubuntu Is The Most User Friendly Linux OS)
- Plug The Cable Of The External HD In The USB Port
- Boot Ubuntu From CD On Your PC
After You Are Inside Ubuntu Now You Need To Mount The External HD, Let's Say Its Name Is "Extrenal-HD"
- Now Up Click On "Places", You Will See "Computer", "CD/DVD Creator" And The Local Partitions On Your PC Mabye Named "Disk 01" etc.. In Addition To The External One Which Is Named "External-HD" (For Example)
- Now Click On "External-HD" And The Partition Will Be Mounted On Your Desktop Just Double Click In It And You'll Be In The External Hard Disk!
- Now You Can Mount The Local Partition In The Same Way And Copy Data To Them..

In Case The Mounting Process Failed, Will Need To Use The Power Of Command Line!

- Click Up In The Menu On "Applications" The "Accessories" And Now Choose "Terminal" A Command Line Terminal Will Open!
- Type >>> sudo su (Then Press Enter)
Now You Must Be The Root User
- Now Type >>> mkdir /home/ubuntu/Desktop/external
- Then Type >>> mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb1
/home/ubuntu/Desktop/external -o force

Now The External Harddisk's First Partition Must Be Mounted On Your Desktop

Note: Most Probably Linux Will Read Your External HD As sdbn (Where n Is A Number) But It May Read It sdc If Another Local Disks Exits

If You Have More Than One Partition In The External Disk You Should Create A Directory For Each On The Desktop And Mount In..

@MORPEUSP
Do you remember when I told you about my Fedora Bootable Flash Drive? :P
You better have space on your Flash Memory for the second time :P

Of course, information should be open source, but this does not mean that ideas and solutions should not be credited!
