Bad news for BVB on Barrios
Borussia Dortmund will have to do without frontman Lucas Barrios for another five to six weeks after it emerged that the injury he suffered playing for Paraguay in the final of the Copa America is more serious than had initially been reported. "The damage to the thigh muscle fibres is a lot more extensive than we were led to believe", BVB coach Jürgen Klopp said on Wednesday. All-in-all, Klopp added, it was "not a pretty story... the injury is worse than the Paraguay team doctor told us." An MRI scan in Dortmund confirmed a provisional diagnosis made by team doctor Markus Braun, based on ultrasound results sent to him at the end of July. Klopp requested that Barrios return early from his holiday in Argentina to sort the matter out and said the striker "was more than happy to do so, as he evidently didn't feel he was in the best hands there." Now the coach looks likely to be without his top scorer in each of the past two seasons (35 goals in 65 games) for "five to six weeks. It's extremely annoying and it casts a shadow over our relations with the Paraguayan FA." As it stands, Barrios will not now be available to the champions until mid-September. bundesliga.com |
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has taken responsibility for the goal that led to his side's shock home defeat at the hands of Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday afternoon.
The hosts missed a string of chances before the 62nd minute where Neuer charged out his goal, but failed to claim the ball from Igor de Camargo, whose header trickled into the net, a blow that Bayern were unable to recover from, eventually losing the game 1-0. Neuer is already an unpopular figure among factions of the Allianz Arena crowd, and speaking to Bild, the Germany 'keeper admitted that the latest mistake was his fault: "It went wrong, we did not take our chances. And then my mistake led to the goal. I look stupid." Bayern Munich boss Jupp Heynckes defended the under-fire custodian, saying: "Manuel had stomach flu before the game, perhaps that is one reason why his concentration levels dropped." The Bavarians were heavily criticised for a series of defensive errors last season, leading to the investment of €18 million on Neuer and €5.5m on Genoa's Brazilian full-back Rafinha, as well as the addition of Jerome Boateng from Manchester City. |

2002. al-akhbar.com |

Former Bayern Munich goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has reignited a heated debate with current players Philipp Lahm and Bastian Schweinsteiger. The 42-year-old's response comes just days after the Germany midfielder said Kahn was usually upset by criticism he received as a player. Schweinsteiger was reacting to comments made by Kahn, who recently questioned his leadership abilities at the Allianz Arena. However, the former goalkeeper has now retaliated as the dispute continues. "I was upset by the previous criticisms [from Schweinsteiger]," Kahn told Kicker. "However, what both players should do now is try and take the next step in their development. "But in Germany this is difficult to achieve as is expected from leaders." "This discussion about leadership is difficult to have in Germany because there is so much emotion and controversy surrounding it. It's not about loudness or alpha-male swagger." Schweinsteiger was recently linked with a €25 million move with Italian champions AC Milan, who are looking for a midfielder. |

Injured Olic out for six to eight weeks
Croatia international Ivica Olic is facing a six to eight-week lay-off after an injury sustained in Bayern’s 5-0 home win over Hamburg proved more serious than initially thought. After examining the player on Sunday, FCB chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt revised an initial diagnosis of pelvic bruising, indicating that the player had in fact suffered a partial rupture of a tendon in the hip area. Olic sustained the injury in the act of scoring Bayern’s fifth goal, as he lunged to direct Holger Badstuber’s header over the line and collided heavily with HSV centre-back Jeffrey Bruma. The latest setback comes as a severe blow to the much-liked 31-year-old, as he had only just returned from a long spell on the sidelines after surgery to repair meniscus and cartilage damage to his left knee. For Ivica, a second-half sub on Saturday, the game against his former HSV team-mates was only his second competitive appearance for Bayern following a nine-month lay-off. fcbayern.de |

Bundesliga say no to majority shareholders by maintaining 50+1 ruling
The Bundesliga will retain its "50+1" rule, preventing private ownership of a majority share of any club. The Standing Court of Arbitration has ruled that the regulation, which is meant to ward off sudden funding surges as have taken place at Chelsea and Manchester City, will continue to be implemented. The rule had previously contained an exception, that any private contributor or company with activity in a club for 20 years or more as of January 1, 1999, could own a majority share. That cut-off date has now been eliminated, opening the door to wealthy private investors in the long-term future. "The verdict is in overall terms a success for the clubs and corporations of the League association. The bottom line is: the 50+1 rule is retained in principle," DFL (German Football League) President Dr. Reinhard Rauball said according to Financial Times Deutschland. "In professional German football, investors will continue only in exceptional and limited cases to have a majority stake in a club. We need not fear the Spanish, Italian or English rules." Furthermore, Rauball added that the regulation would help distinguish German clubs from their foreign counterparts, and in a positive way. "The Bundesliga thus retains its distinctive character and can continue to focus on the factors that have in recent decades contributed greatly to its success: stability, continuity, priority of competition and worldliness." Currently, only Bayer Leverkusen (owned primarily by pharmaceutical company Bayer AG), and Wolfsburg (owned primarily by Volkswagen) are the only Bundesliga clubs of which a majority stake is controlled by a private enterprise. However, the lifting of the cut-off date means that in the long-term future, this could change. Goal.com |

Arjen Robben undergoes groin surgery
Arjen Robben will be sidelined for the next ten days after undergoing groin surgery in Munich, Bayern announced on Friday. The 27-year-old Netherlands international withdrew from the Dutch squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers against Moldova and Sweden and returned to Munich on Thursday, reporting immediately to club Chief Medical Officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt for an examination and treatment. “Due to a pubic bone inflammation, the player has developed a weak groin [a so-called sportsman's groin, an early-stage hernia] over the last few days. Surgery was successfully performed on the groin injury this morning by Prof. Dr. Dr. Tomas Hoffmann at Maria-Theresia hospital in Munich,“ Dr. Müller-Wohlfahrt commented on Friday. The medical unit expects Robben to resume training in around ten days. Robben has already missed five weeks of the season after suffering from a persistant pelvic injury and only returned to action in the Bundesliga on 24th September, scoring in the 3-0 win over Bayer 04 Leverkusen. He subsequently made a brief appearance as a substitute against Manchester City in the Champions League and played 45 minutes in the 0-0 draw at 1899 Hoffenheim last weekend. fcbayern.de |

Official: Thorsten Fink leaves Basel to take over at Hamburg
Hamburg have confirmed on their official website that they have appointed former Basel chief Thorsten Fink as their new head coach. The former Bayern Munich midfielder has signed a deal that ties him to the Bundesliga side until the summer of 2014. Basel already announced earlier on Thursday that Fink had left the club with immediate effect to take the reins at HSV, and the German side have now confirmed the 43-year-old's appointment. Hamburg had been in the market for a new coach since Michael Oenning's departure on September 19. Rodolfo Cardoso initially took over as caretaker boss, but, as he did not have his coaching licence, he was replaced by sporting director Frank Arnesen last week. The former Chelsea chief did not stop in his search for a permanent replacement, though, and has now found his man in Fink. "Thorsten was our absolute first choice. He fits perfectly at HSV with his style of work and his footballing philosophy," Arnesen said on the Hamburg website. The former Ingolstadt coach guided Basel to two Swiss league titles after taking charge in June 2009 and will now be looking to take HSV back to the top. Basel, meanwhile, have appointed assistant coach Heiko Vogel as caretaker boss until December 2011. Goal.com |

Hildebrand joins Schalke FC Schalke 04 have signed former Germany international goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand until the end of the season. The 32-year-old spent last season with Portuguese top flight outfit Sporting Lisbon but has been without a club since the summer. Schalke moved to bring in Hildebrand in response to the long-term injury suffered by regular No1 Ralf Fährmann, who damaged his cruciate ligament in last week's Bundesliga match against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Youngster Lars Unnerstall and veteran Mathias Schober were the only other keepers available to coach Huub Stevens. The seven-time German international had been keeping himself fit by training with Eintracht Frankfurt and also put in some extra sessions with his personal goalkeeping coach Kai Rabe. Hildebrand began his football journey in 1984 with local side FV Hofheim, prior to joining VfB Stuttgart in 1995. It was with the Swabians that the 6'1 shot-stopper became a household name, winning the Bundesliga title in 2007 and establishing himself in the national squad. At the 2006 World Cup on home turf, Hildebrand collected a bronze medal third-choice keeper for Germany. In 2007 he moved to Valencia CF, winning the national cup with the Spanish side before spells at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (2009/10) and Sporting (2010/11) "I'm delighted to be moving to FC Schalke 04. I had to wait a long time for the right offer to come along," said Hildebrand. "I had a good feeling about Schalke, which I didn't have about the other offers I'd had. I'm raring to go and am looking forward to the challenge," he concluded. Hildebrand will join up with his new teammates on Friday, for his first training session. Bundesliga.de |

Bastian Schweinsteiger will be sidelined for the rest of this calendar year after breaking a collar bone in Bayern’s 3-2 home victory over Napoli on Wednesday evening. The serious injury to the club vice-captain means FCB have paid a heavy price for their third Champions League victory in four Group A fixtures and their first-ever win against the men from Naples. The 27-year-old Germany star sustained the injury in the 50th minute of Wednesday’s match after landing awkwardly following a hefty aerial challenge from Napoli’s Swiss international midfielder Gökhan Inler. Schweinsteiger was carried from the field on a stretcher and taken directly to a Munich hospital, where the initial diagnosis was confirmed. The fracture was successfully repaired and a plate inserted in an operation performed at around 2 am on Thursday morning by Prof. Imhoff, assisted by FCB chief medical officer Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt. Schweinsteiger will remain in hospital until Friday, and has been ordered to rest completely for two weeks after that. The first step in his sports rehabilitation programme will be to resume jogging, before the player is cleared to resume training with the team in approximately six weeks. That in turn means Schweinsteiger will not play again this calendar year. fcbayern.de Get well soon Bastian :wa3: :snif: :'( |
