Brazil Shocked By Mexico Despite Late Show Brazil 0-2 Mexico

Brazil have been humbled by a second string Mexico side in their Copa America opener, with a great strike from Nery Castillo and an even better free-kick from Ramon Morales seeing them go down despite a late charge

Mexico - missing seven of their first team regulars - made the most of Brazil's defensive failings to go two goals up before half time.
After a very disjointed 60 minutes, Dunga's boys finally clicked into gear, with Robinho and Anderson impressing in particular.
They peppered the Mexican goal, but Rafa Marquez and boys defended bravely to record the biggest upset of the tournament yet.
First Half
Mexico had their slice of luck early on, it has to be said, when Diego's 6th minute goal was ruled out for an offside call against Robinho - who did not interfere with the play.
However, Hugo Sanchez's boys deserve due credit for making the most of that, and Brazil can blame nobody but themselves for what they got following some very forgettable defending, and a rather disjointed attacking effort.
In the 24th minute, Nery Castillo was played onside inside the box by an out of position Maicon, who then made it even worse by charging at the forward. Castillo calmly flicked it over him with his right foot, before crashing it past Doni with his left.
Five minutes later, Dunga's boys had eggs on their faces as Ramon Morales curled a free-kick over a static Brazilian wall and into the net. Doni could barely move!
Brazil had enjoyed around 65% of the possession until then, but had failed to create danger, with Robinho guilty of giving the ball away more than a few times, as he is wont to.
He did come close with an over-head kick, but it was a largely disjointed effort from the Selecao. The defending champions had plenty of work to do if they were to come even close to redeeming themselves in the second half.
Second Half
Aware that things needed to change, Dunga went for immediate impact, bringing on Afonso Alves for Diego, and the promising Anderson for Elano.
Things did not change immediately as Brazil failed to take charge in the middle, with the Mexicans winning all the 50-50 challenges, and being first to the loose balls.
As the game reached the hour mark, things finally began to change! It was all sparked off by a superb turn from Robinho that sent Anderson clear, the youngster crossing it for Alves to crack a volley goalwards.
Francisco Ochoa was up to it, but it proved to be the spark that ignited the men in yellow. Robinho was then set up by Vagner Love, but Ochoa got just enough to deny him. Gilberto directed a header wide immediately afterwords as things began to happen, with Anderson running the show in the middle of the pitch, and Robinho also seeing plenty of the ball.
Alves had a shot deflected over off Marquez's chest, and then another towering header booted off the line, as Mexico through everything in the way.
At the other end, Castillo had two great chances to wrap it up on the break, but failed to make the most of them, being selfish when he should have passed, and then passing when he should have taken the shot. That meant Brazil still had a sniff of a chance as the game headed into the final minutes.
Daniel Alves came on for Maicon as Dunga made the final throw of the dice, and Robinho hit the bar from a tight angle as chances continued to come thick and fast for the Selecao. However, the goal continued to prove elusive as the game headed into injury time.
Castillo had the best chance of the game in the 93rd minute, when he ran clear on goal, rounded Doni, before sending the ball wide with the goal gaping. Nobody could quite believe it, but thankfully for Mexico, they would not rue it. The game ended 2-0, as Brazil failed to score against Mexico for the sixth time in seven games. They must now scrap through the remaining two games to make the quarter-finals.
To be fair to Dunga, the final 30 minutes showed just what his Brazil could do, with Afonso Alves, Anderson and Robinho doing well. Unfortunately, the first 60 were rather shambolic, and proved to be decisive

BRAZIL TOO HOT FOR CHILE


Brazil produced their best performance of the Copa America so far as Robinho proved the inspiration behind a 6-1 quarter-final drubbing of Chile.
The 23-year-old scored his fifth and sixth goals of the tournament as Nelson Acosta's men were swept away by a first-half salvo.
Brazil took the lead after 14 minutes when Juan headed home and Julio Baptista doubled their advantage six minutes later.
Robinho then netted goals either side of half-time before Josue added Brazil's fifth goal on 68 minutes.
Chile did bag a consolation goal eight minutes later when striker Humberto Suazo cleverly lobbed the ball home but Vagner Love completed the rout right at the death after good approach work from Elano.
Dunga's side now face Uruguay in Maracaibo on Tuesday for a place in the final after their 4-1 win over hosts Venezuela.
Diego Forlan grabbed a brace, while Pablo Garcia and Cristian Rodriguez were also on target in the last-eight encounter as Oscar Tabarez's men gatecrashed the party of 40,000 people packed into the Pueblo Nuevo.
The result came as even more of a surprise given the fact the two sides had played out a goalless draw just four days previously and Uruguay scored only one goal in finishing third in Group A.

Copa America: Mexico routs Uruguay 3-1 to take third place

Updated: 2007-07-15 15:43 Mexico exploited the 38th-minute expulsion of Uruguayan captain Diego Lugano for three goals and rallied for a 3-1 victory Saturday that gave El Tri third place at the Copa America. Cuauhtemoc Blanco converted the penalty to equalize after Lugano was issued a red card for elbowing Gerardo Torrado, and Omar Bravo and Andres Guardado added second-half goals to assure Mexico of finishing third or better in four of the last five South American championships.


Sebastian Abreu gave Uruguay the lead in the 22nd minute, heading in Maximiliano Pereira's cross.
But after Blanco equalized, Bravo lifted a shot over the hands of goalkeeper Fabian Carini, who was racing off his line, in the 68th minute, and Guardado sealed the victory with a left-footed shot from 25 meters in the 76th.
Argentina and defending champion Brazil square off in the tournament final Sunday in Maracaibo.
Mexico finished third in 1997 and 1999 and lost to Colombia in the 2001 final.
El Tri, which lost to the United States in the CONCACAF Gold Cup two days before the start of the Copa America, has reached the semifinals five of the seven times it has been invited to the South American championships as a guest.
"This third place is a privilege and a distinction showing that Mexico is on the right track," manager Hugo Sanchez said. "My players demonstrated they are professionals and that even playing back-to-back tournaments they didn't lower their intensity."
Coming off its penalty-kick loss to Brazil in the semifinals, Uruguay struggled after Lugano's expulsion to maintain possession and feed attacker Diego Forlan.
Uruguay came to Venezuela with a strong, Europe-based team, eager to claim a record 15th title.
"We played a good game, started out dominating, and then in one minute everything changed," said Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabarez.
Mexico lost 3-0 to Argentina on Wednesday to set up the third-place match against the Uruguayans.
