Secularism (العلمانية) VS Sectarianism (الطائفية) and Lebanon

Secularism is the assertion that governmental practices or institutions should exist separately from religion and/or religious beliefs.

In one sense, secularism may assert the right to be free from religious rule and teachings, and freedom from the government imposition of religion upon the people, within a state that is neutral on matters of belief, and gives no state privileges or subsidies to religions. In another sense, it refers to a belief that human activities and decisions, especially political ones, should be based on evidence and fact unbiased by religious influence.

Re: Secularism (العلمانية) VS Sectarianism (الطائفية)

Sectarianism is bigotry, discrimination, prejudice or hatred arising from attaching importance to perceived differences between subdivisions within a group, such as between different denominations of a religion or the factions of a political movement.

Lebanon's religious divisions are extremely complicated, and the country is made up by a multitude of religious groupings.
Sectarianism in Lebanon was caused because of the political sharing of power. The 1943 National Pact gave the Maronite Christians, the majority, more power than the other groups. Although the Taef agreement ended the civil war, power is still divided along sects.

Don't you think that Lebanon should move from being a farm where men of religion and their alike from feudal politicians control the country by lying and by provoking people against each others under the pretext of protecting their sects, to a civilized secular community where everyone is equal in Rights and Duties ??

As long we try to fix this country nothing will work as long we have a sectarian system. Politicians main power is sectarianism and they're working really hard to keep it.
We had some faith that the Lebanese youth will be more "Mature" concerning this problem but it seems their environment is well dominating and brain washing them.

all of our problems are the result of this sick system....the sectarian system is keeping lebanon weak politically....and in my opinion all those agreements and 2ettife2yet made by lebanese parties won't make things better but bt2ajjil l machekil....so yeah i think someday l7ale l 2amnye is gonna be so bad....and i'm afraid that this will happen before the elections since kl wa7ad 3am beched ma3 tayefto.....anyway back to the subject....until we make a secular system nothing will be good....and don't think that the situation in lebanon will ever be good without this system....and a political decision alone can put this system since l 2atraf mestafidin from this system so we need the lebanese people to demand and ytalib bhal chaghle....which i doubt it....

im with Secularism, sometimes when u live in a mono environment, were all ppl are the same as ur religion or ur political views, you can't feel the importance of secularism
while when you go outside your area, and when see how ppl seek in different ways to know what sect and what religion you are, you will know why Secularism is that important!!!
i hope one day MY ID does not contain any information about my religion or sect, whatever i am, it must be between me & my god....
not for the 4,000,000 person in Lebanon to know such details...

hopefully our kids will live in a Secular Regime!..:)

OuR turn is very important in multicolored society we should not focus on differences between religions and make the margin bigger, the secularism exists in multi secular countries and not in mono secular.

It is not if our religion is written on the ID card or not, i already said it, its about our attitude toward the others,
are we ready to accept them , are we ready to accept their beliefs ?!!!

we are able to do so them we are walking into secularism and toward building a strong country

Not to harm anyone, but I believe the religion-politics combo is what ruined history since the pharaos' times.
Religion is a personal belief that should be a background culture and not a dominant source of conflict.
So I am 100% with Secularism and Anti Sectarianism!

Last week i was invited to the FPM conferences about the "Etat Laiique" or " al dawla al madaniya" and they talked about this issue,
Minister Baroud Gave the order for the first time in the history of the modern state of lebanon to delete the religion from the "civil Status" or "Ekjraj l keid".
It was a really good conference, they talked about the problems occuring and how it is hard to apply the civil state, bcuz the society isnt prepared very well.

GMA Talked that the first step toward building a real civil state, is making a unique law for everybody, like civil mariage, personal issue law, heritage law, These issue should be common between all lebanese people.

xcoder 02-12-2009 09:26 AM

Very important step, very well done by minister Baroud.
Finally some progress on that level, the real big progress will start when civil marriage is out and other civil rights that were imprisoned by religions for so long.
