plz guys don't take it mathematically, coz we all hate it :p just think about it this way: 1xy1bc => 1 (x) (x +1) 1 (b) (b + 1) (since y comes after x and c comes after b in the alphabet :D:D:D
if x = 3 and b = 5 the number would be 134 156 (example of x and b don't exist... just numbers to replace the letters lool

and talking about roudy's trick of 1xx1yy this means: 133155 if x = 3 and y = 5 :p lool

general's theory sais that y=x+1 while it is not defined.
a variable is a variable that is independent of other variables unless defined so.

It's a matter of convention. Both methods can be used to represent car numbers, but Roudy's method is more logical since it simulates the programming concept; The idea of having a set of independent variables by default.

I can have a numbering system like the following:
0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z 10 11 ...
In the above numbering system, General's theory is more likely to succeed, where for example a=9+1 and v=u+1 and 10=z+1. However, this theory is a special case of communication where the both sides communicating with each others must agree on it to be used before it is used. The theory of Roudy is more general and can be used everywhere.

So again, both approaches can be used here, but Roudy's approach is more suitable. That's why for example we have many protocols of communications in computer networks, and machines must follow some standards in order to communicate.

both of you are wrong and right at the same time.

Since you didn't define the variable, each one of you is assigning a different value to the Letter=variable.

You problem can be solved easily by, defining the value/ assigning a common understand of the letter=variable
