KNVB Beker clash between Ajax and AZ abandoned after fan invades the pitch
Wednesday's KNVB Beker encounter between Ajax and AZ has been suspended following a pitch invasion by a supporter. An Ajax fan entered the pitch after 38 minutes of play and ran toward AZ goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado before aiming a karate kick at the Costa Rican. The 22-year-old reacted by bringing his attacker down and kicking him twice while he lay on the field, before on-rushing stewards intervened and took the hosts' supporter away. Referee Bas Nijhuis consequently showed Alvarado a straight red card for misconduct, much to the dismay of AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek. The Alkmaar side's trainer entered the fray and ordered his players to leave the pitch and head for the dressing rooms. Representatives of both sides and match officials have decided to cancel the game, and it is yet unclear what the consequences will be for Ajax and AZ or whether the fixture will be rescheduled for a further date. Well, what happened is only the right thing.. By the laws the referee has to issue red, but by the common sense the GK has to defend himself and beat the crap out of that guy (who is most probably on weed). Subsequently, the manager, 1 goal and 1 player down, well... i'd quit too.
