أصدرت محكمة التمييز الجزائية برئاسة القاضي عفيف شمس الدين حكمها النهائي في قضية إقدام مصطفى علي بري في آب 2004 على محاولة قتل زوجته، عارضة الأزياء كارين حتِّي، بحرق القسم الأعلى من جسدها بالمياه الساخنة. ورفعت المحكمة عقوبة السجن من خمس سنوات وإلزامه بتعويض 300 مليون ليرة للمدعية التي قضت بها محكمة الجنايات إلى 15 سنة، وتخفيضها إلى 8 سنوات، وإلزامه دفع مبلغ 500 مليون ليرة للمدعية حتِّي
