Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
It was our (Lebanese) votes in Ohio that gave Bush the victory, majority FPM.
GMA testified in Congress and worked on the Syria Accountability Act. No other Lebanese leader came close to the effort in this. All those who claim that they had anything to do with Syria's withdrawl are liars. It was GMA who got the Syrians to leave Lebanon; Hariri's death is a convinient excuse. President Bush should realize who is legit in Lebanon, I hope he wakes up! |

Re: Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
yes that's true the Lebanese helped in electing Bush and it seems that Mr. Bush evoluated his plans. anyway his plans may pass in Iraq or any other country but not in Lebanon, he's dreaming ;).

Re: Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
I think the reason behind the Lebanese American votes going to Bush is not really related to his policy on Lebanon. Bush is a Republican, which are the more conservative party who are pro-life and generally oppose same-sex marriages, etc. Lebanese people are usually against aborting innocent fetuses and are a bit homophobic. These are just a few examples of how the conservative Republicans like Bush seemed more appealing to the Lebanese voters.

Re: Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
And I just thought that it was Florida that gave the advantage to Double U the first damn time, so I guess you were talking about the second election right?
Be that as it may, I think that Aoun's "efforts" (as you put it) where the convenient excuse to justify the whole Afghanistan/Iraq/New Middle-East thing... So I just guess that this is where he came in handy for the whole "syria out!" extravaganza, therefore very far from the Lebanese lobbying as you might have insinuated. |
Re: Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
Gino, the US is a little different in this regard. The majority of Catholic/Christians are actually Democrats. The majority of Lebanese (between 85-90%) are Maronite/Catholic/Christians and are most likely to fit in this group.
It was Mr. Bush's inclination to want Syria out of Lebanon that turned them on. There are groups (that I'd rather not name) here I'm sure you have heard of that were working towards this. Shaved, yes, the 2nd time.. I don't think you quite got my point. These days, GMA is portrayed as "The evil one who is working for the Syrians". My questions is where were all the "Anti Syrians" back then when GMA was lobbying? They were kneeling at the door steps of Damascus. Whether you agree that GMA had an impact doesn't really matter, these are the facts. |
Re: Fact - Lebanese in America voted for Bush
I know for a fact that his role in all of this is the most important and by far the most honorable, no doubt about it, especially compared to the low life thugs who monopolized (or at least tried) the struggle for independence and sovereignty.
What I was trying to say is that once you look at the bigger picture, HE too was a merely a tool in the hands of the USA, just as Hariri's death was. (directly or not). Hope you didn't get me wrong, I share your point of view, but with a little retrospective, and I reserve myself the right to criticize an FPM action I didn't like. |
