Germany Beat Rumania In Friendly
Germany came from behind to beat Rumania 3-1 in Wednesday’s friendly in Cologne
Germany went behind to an early goal from the technically gifted visitors, before an improved second half performance saw them end as deserved winners. After the impressive 2-0 win over Wales expectations were high. Trainer Joachim Löw made six changes from the side that played so well at the weekend. Podolski and Helmes started upfront, while Manuel Friedrich, Bernd Schneider, Piotr Trochowski, and Hildebrand also came into the side. Rumania stormed into a surprise third minute lead after a Mutu free-kick was turned in by Goian from close range. The dangerous Rumanians caused the German defence all kinds of problems in the first period with Marica a particular danger. Germany slowly got themselves back into the game, but had to wait until just before half time to get the equaliser. Jansen’s cross went over everybody, forcing Schweinsteiger to put the ball back in from the right. Captain Bernd Schneider got his head to the ball to make it 1-1. With numerous changes made at half-time, Germany continued to press and took the lead after 65 minutes through Odonkor. Local hero Patrick Helmes had three chances in the second half to put the game beyond Rumania but failed to convert. Podolski was also a constant threat and his persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when his shot from 20 meters flew in just under the crossbar. In the end the Germans were deserved winners against a side that showed a lot of positive, attacking intention. Germany: Hildebrand, Hilbert, M. Friedrich, Metzelder (A.Friedrich), Jansen (Castro), Hitzlsperger (Rolfes), Schneider (Odonkor), Trochowski, Schweinsteiger, Helmes, Podolski Rumania: Coman, Marin, Tamas, Goian (Constantin), Rat (Radu), Chivu (Petre), Codrea (Munteanu), Nicolita, Dica, Mutu, Marica (Bucur) |
