Cairo court cross-examines Dubai cop in Tamim murder trial

Published: January 17, 2009.

Cairo: A criminal court on Saturday cross-examined a Dubai police officer, who had extracted films from a surveillance camera installed outside the apartment of a Lebanese singer found dead in her apartment in the Gulf emirate last July.

The court resumed on Saturday the hearings in the case of the slaying of Lebanese singer Suzan Tamim, in which Hesham Talaat Moustafa, one of Egypt's top real estate developers, is charged with ordering her murder.

Mohssen Al Sukkari, an ex-Egyptian policeman, claimed that Hesham persuaded him to kill Suzan, with whom he'd allegedly had an affair, in return for $2 million. Hesham, an ex-MP and a member of President Hosni Mubarak's ruling, has denied the accusation. Both face death if convicted.

The court Saturday postponed the hearing sessions until Sunday to hear other prosecution witnesses, including Ali Al Shehab, a Dubai attorney.

Unlike previous hearings, there was no tight security outside the court building in southern Cairo on Saturday.

"This is because of a media gag ordered on reporting about this case," said a security source.

On November 16 the presiding judge at the court banned the media from reporting details about the high-profile case, citing "attempts to influence public opinion".

The court allowed the media only to report its announced decisions, including the final verdict.

Five journalists from two Egyptian opposition newspapers, including their chief editors, are on trial for breaching the court ban.
