Have this in mind. No programming today, no progress for tomorrow.
You people don't understand the importance of programing in the evolution of human's life nowadays.
Also, I don't find this a healthy approach to give students some programing assignments that are not based on structured programming. This way of coding is related to the epoch of Flintstones. 3a shway they will come to tell you to program using "goto"!
I understand that they want to emphasize on the basic and want students to really assimilate the material. But that's not how we deal with this issue. The initiation of a good programming knowledge should be based on truly ideal concepts and not on corrupted ones. You are coding high level language and not assembly language, your code should be more compact.
