The earth has been alive for billions of years, this is a very normal activity, like it is said in the article, the north pole have been shifting ever since the scientists first located its, the speed is not much of an issue, because, like I said, the earth have been alive for billions of years, of course this activity happened before on an even faster rate than 40 mpy.
