It's a sin not because of the act itself, it's a sin because any child that is born does not have the rights that a child in a legitimate marriage does.
Islam acknowledges the need for sexual satisfaction. It's considers it a need equal to the need for food and water.
And why would it be shameful? What are the negatives?
