Bad news for BVB on Barrios

Borussia Dortmund will have to do without frontman Lucas Barrios for another five to six weeks after it emerged that the injury he suffered playing for Paraguay in the final of the Copa America is more serious than had initially been reported.

"The damage to the thigh muscle fibres is a lot more extensive than we were led to believe", BVB coach Jürgen Klopp said on Wednesday.

All-in-all, Klopp added, it was "not a pretty story... the injury is worse than the Paraguay team doctor told us." An MRI scan in Dortmund confirmed a provisional diagnosis made by team doctor Markus Braun, based on ultrasound results sent to him at the end of July.

Klopp requested that Barrios return early from his holiday in Argentina to sort the matter out and said the striker "was more than happy to do so, as he evidently didn't feel he was in the best hands there." Now the coach looks likely to be without his top scorer in each of the past two seasons (35 goals in 65 games) for "five to six weeks. It's extremely annoying and it casts a shadow over our relations with the Paraguayan FA." As it stands, Barrios will not now be available to the champions until mid-September.
