Reports in Germany claim Bayern Munich are targeting Marco Van Basten to be their next boss.
With Ottmar Hitzfeld set to leave Bayern Munich at the end of the season, the hunt is on for a new manager. Hitzfeld Had Enough Bayern currently sit top of the Bundesliga but relations with current trainer Hitzfeld have become strained. The 58-year-old, who was won the Champions League with Borussia Dortmund and in a previous spell at Bayern, said last week that he had already made his decision as to whether to remain with the Bavarian giants. With contract negotiations previously scheduled to commence early next year, it is widely thought that this was a veiled way of the Chief announcing his departure. Van Basten The New Man? Reports on Monday in Germany suggest that Dutchman Marco Van Basten is top of the Bavarians' wishlist. Ulli Hoeneß, Bayern's sporting director, has his eye on Marco Van Basten to take the managerial hotseat next summer. The Netherlands coach has already said he will step down from his current job after Euro 2008, and although he hasn't had any success as a manager at club level the Münchner are impressed with his managerial skills and strong command of German. Mark Van Bommel, Bayern's influential Dutch midfielder, does not see eye-to-eye with Van Basten, however, and retired from international football accordingly. Chris Williams |
