Default Intelligence

What is it? How can you define it? How can you measure it?
Let us take an example from nature:

A chimpanzee and a sheepdog.

-A chimpanzee interacts with its environment and uses improvised tools to perform certain tasks (using a twig to get honey and termites, etc.) To put it in short terms, it can reason.
-A chimpanzee however does not know what to do when given a specific task to do, i.e. it cannot herd a flock of sheep

-A sheepdog needs virtually no training, but knows every single detail there is to know about herding sheep. It knows how to give and take when it comes to its job, and can, to some extent, reason in the field of interest it has.
-A sheepdog however cannot use tools to fulfill some of its needs, it cannot understand what it sees in the mirror, it cannot reason when it comes to its greater environment.

Which is more intelligent lies in the way we define intelligence, no? I might go with the chimp, Dany might choose the dog... I dont mean to sound too philosophical, but it is a matter of relativity in the end... (A)
What are we then? Super-intelligent, or still very undeveloped when it comes to intellect...?

human are distinguished from other animal by their intelligence, the chimp and the dog have no intelligence, what they have is " mahara fitriyya ", nothing creative, a chimp might learn few things in a very small domain, this is 5el2a, i mean god gave him the ability to learn few things. the human are creative indeed, i mean the dumbest person can learn few things.

and yes, intelligence can be measured, IQ, take an IQ test here for example: www.tickle.com and tell your score, 100 is the average, 120 is a score of a smart person, 130 is a score of a talented person, 133 is the score of kingroudy and 140 is the score of a genuis.

lol, im quite aware of the iq test bro, i kinda was hinting somewhere out of the box.
Also, a chimp is not born with the knowledge of using tools. It discovers that on its own, and learns and reasons based on that. Barely anything compared to our intelligence, but debatable nonetheless...

i know you were aware of the Iq test gino, but i wanted to insist that this is the best way to measure the intelligence.
on the other hand, what you said about the chimp in the second post is the same as what i said in my first reply, probably i expressed myself wrong.

actually what Gino syas is 100% true.
lets take for example the IQ test.
do it the 1st time, u might get a low IQ value, do it more than once u ll start getting higher values, is it u getting more intelligent or u just figured how u should answer?
Take any1 good at his job, seclude him from his working environment and let him take an IQ take, he might get a low score. But, In his job, he is the 1st, the best he is intelligent.
Intelligence is based on what u define as intelligent behavior, and cannot be distingushed without taking into consideration the factors that defines it.
so it all depends on how u define it, is it being smart at a certain point in time? at a certain field, or just being a smart-ass? :P

Many times in our society intelligence is judged by test scores, careers, and success. Although these methods of measuring intelligence are not always accurate they are still used. IQ tests are given to people and the scores on these tests are supposed to reflect the level of intelligence a person has. What makes these tests so accurate? What about intelligent people who do not take tests well? They may become nervous and may not work well under pressure. I believe there are many forms of intelligence, some more important than others are. A person may be very smart but when it comes to subjects like math and science, or when it comes to English and writing they may not know much about it. Also, some people may not do very well in school but can fix almost anything that you put in front of them.

Often times those who are smart in school subject lack the common sense needed to survive outside of work or school although that is not always the case. Others who may be very intelligent when it comes to common sense and making the right decision on the street lack the wisdom need in school or work. This is a critical part of survival and I believe common sense is needed just as much as anything else. There are those people who are naturally smart, who grasp concepts well, and do not need to study much at all to do well. There are others who need to work hard to do well. They need to study and concepts do not come as easily to them as others. Are they not considered intelligent because of this? Also many people may be very intelligent yet they are either lazy or uninterested, therefore their natural mental ability never is shown.

Many cultures have their own opinion of intelligence. If you are born and brought up as an Indian, to them intelligence comes with age and strength. If you can hunt well and survive on you own then you are considered intelligent, you are not given a written test and judged by the scores. Many other cultures also have their own definition of intelligence too. Social status also has a very big impact on people perspective of your intelligence. Upper to middle class people not only have a better chance of getting a good education, but are thought of as more intelligent because they have money. Lower-middle to lower class people do not have all the opportunities that the others do and are also perceived as unintelligent because of their lack of money and those opportunities. Judging people on their level of intelligence, mental ability, and level of success through tests and careers gives you a very poor judge of character.

I do not agree that intelligence can be measured at all. To me it is not only how smart a person, but also his/her attitude, who you are as a person, and the decisions you make in life. Your intelligence should not only be graded through a test but rather on how you live your life...
