Absolutely disgusting display, they just can't defend set pieces, and for some reason they are playing without a number 10, leaving the "hole" empty. All their emphasis is on passing and yet they are unable to bring the ball forward. With this form they will lose to inter.

Even Franz Beckenbauer Would Look Poor Under Louis Van Gaal
How Bayern Munich Are Getting The Fundamentals Wrong In Training

Louis van Gaal's intransigence is sabotaging Bayern Munich by neglecting the basics of defending.

These famous words were spoken by Louis van Gaal last May after Bayern Munich lost to Inter in the Champions League final. Since then, the Dutch coach has insisted upon maintaining a possession and attack-oriented style of play in his teams and continued to have success. His emphasis on the fundamentals of offensive football—five-yard passes, triangular ball movement—has turned Bayern into one of the most technically sound teams in the world.

It is therefore as frustrating as it is ironic that Bayern’s Achilles’ heel is a deficiency in one of the most fundamental parts of the game: dead ball situations. On Wednesday, the Bavarians earned a walloping 67.4 per cent of possession against Schalke, yet lost 1-0. Their visitors almost never looked like scoring from free play, yet would have deserved three goals before half time. The difference that mattered on the day was not the teams’ gap in technique, but instead, their execution from set pieces. And in that aspect, Schalke earned a resounding victory: Raul and Benedikt Hoewedes were each unlucky to have efforts cleared off the goal line, but the two combined with free headers to create the necessary—and only—goal as Schalke handed Bayern their first home loss in the DFB Pokal in 20 years. And from a Bayern perspective, it was entirely avoidable.

The problem at Bayern can be found in training. As is manifested in the way his team plays, Van Gaal emphasises technique and passing above all things on the training ground. The trouble with this is that certain fundamentals are put on the back burner. As skipper Philipp Lahm recently remarked, Bayern “can’t always look to play elaborately when [they] have the ball at the back.” At times, Bayern players have forgotten the first rule taught to young players: to never pass the ball in front of their own goal. Most of the time, these lapses go unpunished. But they are exploited on occasion, and when they are, the goals conceded are easily avoidable.

On Wednesday Bayern’s fundamental deficiency was not in passing the ball out of the back, but in something simpler still: defending from set plays. When Raul scored, there may as well not have been any Bayern player on the pitch: the Spaniard and Hoewedes were each about a yard free of any defender, making the former Real Madrid man’s finish no more difficult than it would have been in a training exercise.

In fairness, the Bayern players ought not to take much blame for their deficiencies in defending from set pieces. As Goal.com Germany's Maximiliaian Bensinger can attest, the fact is, Bayern rarely practice dead ball situations in training: "Under Van Gaal, Bayern primarily stick to passing drills, while neglecting defensive fundamentals such as defending from dead ball situations." Van Gaal's stubbornness has led to widespread criticism from fans and pundits alike, and for good reason. Just as it can be expected from a team that almost exclusively trains with technical emphasis will pass well, it can also be expected that a side that does not train with defensive drills will be poor in defence. As the adage goes, practice makes perfect: even the great Franz Beckenbauer would have lost his edge if he were to have stopped training from dead ball situations.

There is something to be said for a team that strives to play beautifully, one that instead of hoping for penalty kicks and dead ball situations instead uses superior technique to entertain and dominate matches without the need to benefit from the referee’s whistle. At the same time, a coach has to be pragmatic: if his players cannot defend in the simplest situations, his team deserves to lose, as Bayern did on Wednesday.

Van Gaal’s highbrow approach to attacking football deserves respect; his team is among the most creative and sensational offensive forces in the world. However, he fails to recognise that while a team can be “too good” to rely on set plays, no team can be above defending against them. On Wednesday, these deficiencies were exploited by a Schalke side that is languishing in the lower half of the Bundesliga table. Fans can only imagine with horror the danger Bayern will face when they again meet the reigning champions of Europe, Inter. Less than two weeks remain until that game for Van Gaal to teach his team to defend. The clock is ticking…

lol Inter are shit, seriously, they are the luckiest team in the world at this moment in the league adding wins by virtually doing nothing and that's only supported by the fact that Serie A teams kneel down to big teams that go defensive. Bayern should look beyond that, particularly envision a precautionary plan for the future. First, reinforce the team with a formidable defense. Van Gaal may be partially at fault, but other than Lahm I really don't see how any of the other defenders meet the standards of a team such as Bayern, even Badstuber who is ridiculously overrated.

That's not true, he didn't resign...
The team board had a meeting today and they decided to delay the decision concerning Van Gaal's future...

I hope he resigns. He's a good coach but it's the right time for a serious change in Bayern. What's going in Bundesliga and the cup isn't acceptable for such team.

They should recruit new players too, i don't understand why they don't get new high caliber players.

Van Gaal coach until end of season
Contract cancelled by mutual consent on 30 June 2011

Munich, Monday 7 March 2011: FC Bayern Munich board directors Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Karl Hopfner, director of sport Christian Nerlinger, and head coach Louis van Gaal, today met to discuss the current situation at the club. The club has issued the following summary of the meeting:
  • Louis van Gaal will remain FC Bayern Munich head coach until the end of the current season on 30 June 2011;
  • the contract between FC Bayern Munich and Louis van Gaal, originally set to expire on 30 June 2012, will be terminated by mutual consent at the end of the current season;
  • the reason for the termination is a difference of opinion regarding the strategic direction of the club.
Given FC Bayern Munich’s difficult sporting situation at the present time, all the parties resolved to direct their entire and combined efforts towards the club still achieving its minimum sporting targets for this season.
