Germany's struggle to find a consistent, reliable left back has been no secret in recent years. Today, coach Joachim Loew revealed that he may soon call up Bayern Munich youngster Diego Contento to play on the left side of defence.

"He has developed well," the Germany gaffer told TZ. "I see Diego as a player who could be interesting."

Loew went on to compare the 20-year-old to recent Bayern call-ups Holger Badstuber and Thomas Mueller. In conclusion, the coach said: "Contento is not quite ready, but it is conceivable that he will be soon."

It may require a bit of convincing for Loew to secure the international future of Contento, however. Four days ago, the German-born son of Italian immigrants, was quoted as having said: "My goal was always to play for Italy."

Miro and Mark sidelined

A lengthening injury list is threatening to derail Bayern’s efforts to overcome their patchy start to the domestic season. Breno, Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, David Alaba, Diego Contento and Bastian Schweinsteiger are already sidelined, and Mark van Bommel, Miroslav Klose and Ivica Olic have now returned to Munich from national team duty with injuries. Van Bommel and Klose are definitely out of the next two to three matches.

Klose sustained a hamstring strain in Germany’s 3-0 victory away to Kazakhstan and is out of action for the next ten days. He will miss Saturday’s Bundesliga fixture at home to Hannover 96 and Tuesday’s Champions League trip to CFR Cluj. He is also extremely doubtful for the away meeting with Hamburg three days after that.

Van Bommel is sidelined for the same period. On Wednesday, Bayern doctor Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt examined the FCB and Netherlands captain, establishing that the player had sustained ruptured tissues and extensive bruising to his right knee in a Euro 2012 qualifier against Moldova last Friday, but still appeared for the first 72 minutes of his country’s meeting with Sweden on Tuesday night.

On a more positive note, Olic has not yet been ruled out of the Hannover clash. The 31-year-old broke his nose while playing for Croatia in a Euro 2012 qualifier away to Israel at the weekend and underwent corrective surgery in Munich on Tuesday. Further examinations on Thursday and Friday will determine whether Olic might be fit to play with a protective mask.

Bayern Munich vs Werder Bremen

Cup clashes between Bayern and Werder Bremen have popped up regularly down the years. The sides have met three times in the final, and six times altogether in the competition. Bayern, the most successful club in cup history, have won five of the six encounters, with the northerners victorious on just one occasion. The sides meet for the seventh time in the cup at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday evening.
