well i worked on this for a short while. Usually the barcode that u see everywhere is a 2D barcode. It only stores small amount of data which contains only numbers. Usually it stores what is called a serial number for a specific product. But since huge amounts of NEW products enter the market daily, there was a need to lengthen the number to keep all barcodes unique, so there was the need to create a 3D barcode. The picture you showed us represent a 3D barcode. This barcode supports huge numbers of characters unlike the 2D barcode. It can store huge amount of strings(numbers and characters in the same time, URLs...). These barcodes are not yet used for products, but it used for IDs and stuff like that...
