After 20 years of playing for Manchester United, Ryan Giggs knows a top-class goalkeeper when he sees one.

And having seen new goalkeeper David de Gea make a string of fine saves on his debut in a pre-season friendly against Chicago Fire, the 37-year-old is excited about the Spaniard's ability.

"Yeah, I thought he had a good performance," said Giggs to Goal.com. "His distribution was very good and he's confident."

De Gea conceded early on but did not allow that to affect his confidence and responded with several acrobatic saves. In the second half, Chicago's inability to get past the keeper allowed United to execute several counterattacks that saw them score three times in 30 minutes.

The custodian acknowledges that it has been a major transition coming from Atletico Madrid to Manchester United, and hopes that he will get more friendlies under his belt to become familiar with his team-mates.

"I'm still new to the team and league and it's an entirely different system than the one in Spain," De Gea explained to Goal.com. "It was my first game and it's important I get a few more before the season starts."

De Gea’s transition might not happen overnight but his manager Sir Alex Ferguson was also impressed with the 20-year-old’s performance.

"He's technically very good," Ferguson said. "He saved us on many different occasions."

Sir Alex Ferguson is determined to make sure Manchester United hit the ground running and improve on last year’s start to the season.
The manager felt that United’s match fitness levels were below-par last season as Chelsea took an early lead in the title race

Sir Alex told reporters: “Last year, I mucked up by giving the players too many half games in pre-season and not enough 90 minutes.
“I will address that this year because when we played Fulham and Everton early last season we were well short, fitness-wise.”
United remain linked with midfielder Wesley Sneijder but Sir Alex has suggested he will be looking for more from the current squad.
He continued: “We lost five players in their 30s this summer.
“That helped finance the three younger players – Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea – I have brought to the club.
“At this moment, I can’t see another addition. The type of player we might have been looking for is not available.
“I am happy with the players I have got at this moment in time.”
The veteran manager is looking forward to next year’s title race but believes that the biggest challenge to United next season is themselves.
He added: “Anyone can win the league – ourselves, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal or Chelsea.
“But when I look at it, our biggest challenge is ourselves.”
Manchester United face the MLS All-stars tomorrow and will face former midfielder David Beckham.
