Manchester United prepare Baines move but set £12m limit on Everton defender

The Merseyside club are ready to offer the second-choice England left-back an improved new contract to ward off sustained interest from the Old Trafford heavyweights

Manchester United are ready to make a move for Leighton Baines but have set a £12 million limit on signing the Everton defender.

Goal.com understands that capturing Baines remains a priority for Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to secure a long-term successor for 31-year-old Patrice Evra.

The interest from Old Trafford has not yet progressed beyond informal discussions but United are ready to step up their chase and could even make their first formal offer for the left-back next week.

However, the 19-times league champions are not willing to pay more than £12m for a player that Everton value at £17m and have decided to limit their salary package to £80,000-a-week.

Everton are ready to offer Baines an improved contract to keep hold of a player who manager David Moyes regards as vital to his plans.

The 27-year-old was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year following an outstanding 2011-12 campaign and Everton's system is built around his raids from left-back. He is also the team's set-piece specialist.

As Goal.com revealed last month, United fringe players such as Ji-Sung Park and the Da Silva twins, Fabio and Rafael, were mentioned as possible sweeteners in a deal for Baines.

However, Everton would prefer a straight cash deal and Park and Fabio have subsequently joined QPR on permanent and loan deals, respectively.

Speaking at the end of May, Baines described United's reported interest in him as a big compliment: "The United link is flattering. There is no harm in people talking about it because it is a great club. But I'm at a great club as well, a club that I love.

"Would it be hard to turn United down? I'm not letting my focus shift to that while I am in camp [with England].

"I'm focused on what I'm doing at the moment. Would it be hard to leave Everton? Yes, obviously. You know what it means.

“I’ve been there for five years myself but also know first-hand what it means to a lot of people so, yes, it would be.”

Tottenham turn down Carvalho & Sahin to hold out for cash-only €51m Modric deal

Tottenham have turned down the prospect of Real Madrid including Nuri Sahin or Ricardo Carvalho in any attempted offer for Luka Modric as the north Londoners hold out for a straight cash deal worth around €51 million (£40m).

The Spanish giants are struggling to meet Spurs' valuation of Modric and had hoped to pursue a player-plus-cash move in an attempt to trim their squad.

Sources at White Hart Lane have denied suggestions that a deal has already been struck for Modric to move to the Santiago Bernabeu, although negotiations are ongoing, with Real Madrid believed to have significantly improved their previous offer of €39.5m (£31m).

Spurs are adamant they will not be bullied into selling their star midfielder, who was fined heavily in July for refusing to train and failing to take part in the squad's pre-season tour of the United States.

One factor for the Londoners has been the difficulty in lining up a direct replacement for the playmaker. Joao Moutinho is the top target but Porto want €38m (£30m) for the Portuguese midfielder, while Spurs coach Andre Villas-Boas rejected the idea of a move for Sahin as he believes the Turk would struggle to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

Tottenham have not completely ruled out a future move for Arsenal target Sahin - perhaps on a season-long loan - but they have no interest in Carvalho, who was omitted from Real Madrid's own pre-season tour of the United States.

"Spurs don't want to consider a player swap as Villas-Boas knows the players he wants to reinvest the money in," an insider told Goal.com. "Carvalho and Sahin are the two that have been mentioned but he's not interested at the moment. He thinks Sahin could struggle with the pace of English football and would rather go all out for Moutinho."

Madrid's pursuit of Modric has been further complicated by the willingness of Paris Saint-Germain to pay €51m for the Croatia international, and Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will not lower his demands.

The 26-year-old, who cost Spurs €23m (£16.5m) in 2008, has his heart set on a switch to Los Blancos, but PSG could emerge as his only escape route from White Hart Lane, especially with the north London club unwilling to sell him to a Premier League rival.

He has four years left on his Spurs contract but is understood to have agreed a deal worth around €152,000- (£120,000)-a-week to join Jose Mourinho’s side as they look to retain their Liga title.

While all parties eventually expect to strike a deal, Modric's future will become clearer after the Tottenham squad return from the United States on Wednesday.

Goal.com

and the saga continues

not very, although there is a possibility but it is said he either goes to City, United, or Juve.
So one of these destinations is likely this or next year if Arsenal decides to grab onto him

I envy Arsenal for signing Santi Cazorla amazing player!
As for Lucas Moura, official reports have confirmed that United pulled out of the race due to his price and his wage demands, and also suggested he is moving to PSG either after the Olympics or in January :/ damn money..
As for Modric, no 1 is saying a word so i dnt know what's his deal.
Van Persie is said to be changing his mind on Arsenal after the arrival of Giroud, Podolski, and Cazorla proved that Arsenal are still in the hunt for top titles.
Any other news anyone about other clubs and big names? Juve and the search for a striker? I know they have problems now but have they stopped looking?
