there are ten packages, 10 diamonds each, ten grams per diamond but one package of diamonds weigh only 9 grams per diamond . How do you find out which package contains the 9 grams diamonds ? You may use a scale balance only one time.
not an easy one.. |

I remember solving something similar to this long time ago over the net. Anyway, you take one diamond from the first package, two from the second, three from the third, 4 from package 4, 5 from package 5, 6 from package 6, 7 from package 7, 8 from package 8, 9 from package 9, you leave the package number 10.
You put them on the balance. If the total weight of the diamonds is 450 grams, then the bag 10 is the package that contains 9 grams diamonds. If the total is 449 then the first package is the one that contains 9 grams diamonds, because we took only one diamond from the first package. etc.. |
