Default Re: How Fast Are You ?

actually it is not possible cuz there is not an OS (Vista) that uses dual core, so no kernel instructions to access the 2nd cpu, ur pc just uses them as 1 core atm.
even if a program is multithreaded (the current kinda multiprocessing programming solution), the windows implementation of mulithreads is via software emulation till vista gets here.
and even if the OS uses dual core, the application should be written in a way to utilize both CPUs (games dt do it atm). even the most advanced game engine like Unreal engine 3.0 is still 1 core. you are now using 1 x 2.21ghz same as me, i am using 1 x 2.00ghz, when vista gets here it it ll be different cuz even if an application was written for 1 core the OS (aka vista) will make sure to divide the load between cpus.
as for rendering and simulations:
- rendering might need 4GB of memory or more
but simulations (real time aka games) will need more GPU power than memory power, well at least till dx10 is released as there is a new way (according to the devil M$) that they made to transfer the data seamlessly between system memory and GPU memory which kinda means u ll use the 4GB in simulations but not currently :/
after reading the above i deduce i am a too nerdy

well, vista uses dual core, and there are game engines that even uses QUAD CORE, and i've seen a screeshot taken from a demo by intel.
second, if the application is multithreaded, it will use both cores even if u r on any OS
http://www.behardware.com/html/news/...6-01-2007#8548
the link i provided is too proove the quad core gaming.
well, u can compare an athlon 64 to an athlon 64 X2 and see the benifit of dual core in multithreaded apps on xp.

the link u provided is supported by intel, so it might be adjusted to use specific dual core CPU instructions what i mean is that u cannot NOW really use dual core (unless u contact intel i guess or get their dual core instruction set somehow and yet u will be writting assembly for that i think).
and yes as i said above in my statement Vista uses multicore processors.

as for athlon comparison i am not familiar with it, but multithreads in xp are just software emulation, the better ur system memory, the best it will perform because when windows XP was made, there were not any multi-core systems, at least not in the way they exist now. so it will be weird if M$ supported in their OS calls for something that will happen in the futur.

the link i provided is supported by intel for sure, and the game engine is by futurmark as u read. and i have something to say, so even if an app is not multithreaded, it might beneifit from dual core, why? because there are other applications running in the background, so let's say the application is running on core 1, others are running on core 0, so this makes a benifit.
as for the athlon vs athlon x2, and/or Pentium 4 vs Pentium D.
u can google for reviews and bechmarks and notice the difference.
as for xp, it was made when there was no clue about dual core i think (2001), and hence, xp does not give an advantage for dual core, but it supports it and u can see a difference, specially when multitasking.

Well .... a LOT of programs use multi processors and windows Does provide ways of supporting multi procs. the CPU is multi core and as long as the application is designed to use milti proc, it will use both cores.
now the OS itself might not support multi procs, But IF the application is designed to do so, it will.

I second Kingroudy, XP Home will run only a single physical CPU with dual-core, while XP PRO is licenced to use up to 2 physcial CPU (as in dual-socket)

I have to thank you guys for ur valuable info, and getting me to actually research and read about these new architectures. it's embarrassing that a computer engineer is clueless about these new technologies. guess i better start reading hehehehe...

well, i agree with dazlingo, and sayo
second, i wanna say that all my knowledge is throughout reading.
third, i rememberd to have seen patches for games that makes them go dual core or more (yes, official patches)
