The Answer :

X is Abousoun's age.
Y is his wife's age.

y - x = x/11 + y/11

y - y/11 = x + x/11

10y/11 = 12x/11

y = 1.2x

y = 10a + b

x = 10b + a

10a + b = 12b +1.2a

8.8a = 11b

a = 1.25b

Two digits that satisfy this are:
a = 5
b = 4

x = 45 <-- Abousoun's age
y = 54

Fraction of life as a boy = 1/4
Fraction of life as a youth = 1/8
Fraction of life as an active man = 1/2
Fraction of life as boy, youth and active man = 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/2 = (2 + 1 + 4)/8 = 7/8
Fraction of life as an old man = 1 − 7/8 = 1/8
Thus, one-eighth of Tawa's life (as an old man) is 9 years.
So, Tawa's Age = 72 years.

It may be noted that:
Life as boy = 72/4 = 18 years.
Life as youth = 72/8 = 9 years.
Life as active man = 72/2 = 36 years.


The radius of the circle riddle:



Using Pythagoras' Theorem (see Hint above)
for the right-angled triangle in the figure alongside,
(r - a)2 + (r - b)2 = r2
Now, a = 5 cm and b = 10 cm. So,
(r - 5)2 + (r - 10)2 = r2 or
r2 - 2(5)r + 52 + r2 - 2(10)r + 102 = r2. This simplifies to
r2 - 30r + 125 = 0. On factorizing, we get
(r - 25)(r - 5) = 0.
Thus, the radius of the circle is 25 cm.
Food for thought:
In the above solution,
(r - 25)(r - 5) = 0.
Thus, r = 25 cm. The other possibility (r = 5 cm) is rejected. Why?
Is the following reasoning valid?
r - b = 5 - 10 = -5 cm. No negative dimension is allowed.
