Seeing Earth, years ago

This may hurt some ppl's minds.

I was watching on the Discovery Channel a documentary about:

IF we could travel faster than light... Could we fly so far away & get a powerful enough telescope & look back @ the Earth, would we see it x (time) ago? for e.g: If u look @ an object in the sky that is 480 Light Years away, then u r viewing it as it looked 480 Years ago...

Think about it, if we could travel 600 Light Years & look back @ Earth, we would see it as it was 600 Years ago??

We're flying faster than light away from the Earth. Then looking at it, would be like seeing what was happening at whatever time cuz the images haven't reached where u are yet. It's kinda hard to think about but then may easy to others...

Does this make sense?

This had no sense.cuz a light year is a distance (1ly=9,460,730,472,580.8Km) and not a time. so flying @the the speed of light is not flying in time but its a distance so no way we can go back in time.
a light year is the distance traveled by the light in a year so this is not true.

Actually yes we can go back in time.

And concerning what you just said about light years it is the distance traveled by light in one year.
But what justin means is that once we exceed the speed of light we start traveling back in time. That is not proved true theoretically speaking.
Going back in time by traveling faster than the speed of light is a negative. You can't, or not as far as I know.

yes it is true if we can travel in the speed of light we can travel back in time but actually it is impossible to reach the speed of light

Actually, it's NOT theoretically impossible 2 travel faster than light.. It's theoretically impossible to accelerate to the speed of light (or faster)...

For the ones who said It is impossible to travel faster than the speed of light, can suppose there were such things as "Wormholes" leading Hundreds of Light Years away....Perhaps if we were to get a high powered telescope through said wormhole... then perhaps we would be able 2 view the Earth as it looked hundreds of years ago... Supposing u could, lets say u looked @ a city... Would u see the city as it looked 600 years ago? Would there b ppl from 600 years ago there??? If u could zoom in that far & ur telescope was 600 Light Years away in the present year, then u should c the world as it looked in 1407...

What I mean is this: think of it in the way that if u went 600 LY away u would b in the year 2607 & see the world in 2007...
If u were an electron (or larger body) travellin' faster than the speed of light, current physics does indeed suggest that u would experience history in reverse & as time passed (for u) & u flew away from the Earth, u would b "seein'' further & further into the Earth's past with each passing moment....

So not such a silly idea afterall....

the human being can maybe go faster than the speed of light one day.i believe in that.
bas going back in time is impossible.
the word "years" in "light years" have no relation wiz the year wich is 365 day.

Dr. Scoo you are speaking from your own point of view. Everyone who has taken advanced physics can prove to you that it is possible to go back in time.
about going faster than the speed of light, there are many constraints that makes it impossible.
i can check my course notes again if you want proof
