On February 3, 1959, a small-plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa, United States, killed three popular American rock and roll musicians: Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and Jiles Perry Richardson (The Big Bopper), as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson. The day was later called The Day the Music Died by Don McLean in his song, "American Pie".
Memorial In 1988, Ken Paquette, a Wisconsin fan of the 1950s era, erected a stainless steelmonument depicting a steel guitar and a set of three records bearing the names of each of the three performers. The monument is located on private farmland, about one quarter of a mile west of the intersection of 315th Street and Gull Avenue, five miles (8 km) north of Clear Lake. He also created a similar stainless steel monument to the three musicians located outside the Riverside Ballroom in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where Holly, the Big Bopper and Valens played on the night of February 1, 1959. This second memorial was unveiled on July 17, 2003. Monument at Crash Site "American Pie" ( the day the music died ) reached #1 in 1972, shortly after it was released for more info on the song > http://www.rareexception.com/Garden/Pie.php The day the music died by Don mclean ( right click - save as ) ps. the song is named also as american pie , dnt know why Lyrics : A long, long time ago... I can still remember How that music used to make me smile. And I knew if I had my chance That I could make those people dance And, maybe, theyd be happy for a while. But february made me shiver With every paper Id deliver. Bad news on the doorstep; I couldnt take one more step. I cant remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride, But something touched me deep inside The day the music died. So bye-bye, miss american pie. Drove my chevy to the levee, But the levee was dry. And them good old boys were drinkin whiskey and rye Singin, "thisll be the day that I die. "thisll be the day that I die." Read more ...

Before it was a bad teen sex comedy, the phrase "American Pie" meant only one thing: a metaphor for the lost postwar dream, a requiem for the teenage world of innocence, abundance, and supposed unity that accompanied the rock and roll movement of the Fifties. Thank You ...
