lol Netherlands simply played better than Italy.
Italy actually have better players than those that were included.
+ when there is no Nesta and Maldini on defense, you expect Italy to have a strong defense ?

Netherlands could have scored alot more, especially that Buffon did like 3 amazing saves, some shot that hit the post by some dutch youngster, + some very near misses by Van persie and so.
Italy could have scored through Pirlo's free kick and Luca toni who had the dumbest miss in the tournament so far. VAn der sar was pretty much amazing too.

But after all Netherlands deserved it and they won. It's that simple. They are very fast team and very organized, first half they played full offense achieving two goals and somewhat safe lead, and second half focused on defense, yet had alot of amazing and thrilling strikes lead by van persie and van der vart.

Oh and Sneijder's goal, sums up all the match, it shows how powerful the chemistry between the players is.

judging from today France and Romania aren't that better as well
So it's still too early to judge and predict (okey we can predict ) ...
Many teams who lose their first match reach the finals and Italy is one of them
