Klinsmann promises better from Bayern

One of five Bundesliga coaches starting out with new clubs at the weekend, Jürgen Klinsmann said his FC Bayern München side "need some time" to hit their stride.

Hamburg recovery
Everything seemed to be going swimmingly for Klinsmann as the German champions stormed into a 2-0 lead inside 16 minutes of Friday's game against Hamburger SV. However, in their first league game under Martin Jol, Hamburg pulled one back through former Bayern striker José Paolo Guerrero before a Piotr Trochowski spot-kick made it 2-2. "I would have preferred to start with a victory, but the draw was a fair result," said Klinsmann. "The players who were at UEFA EURO 2008™ are not at 100 per cent yet, but I see my team developing in training every day. We'll need some time to perform at our best, but our time will come." Jol added: "When you kick off with a draw at Bayern, you have to be content."

Debutant coaches were on opposite benches as Bruno Labbadia led Bayer 04 Leverkusen for the first time in the domestic league at home against a BV Borussia Dortmund side marshalled by former 1. FSV Mainz 05 boss Jürgen Klopp. The latter was to end the day as the happier man, his side earning a 3-2 victory at the BayArena on Saturday. "It was a spectacular match and a great start for me and my team," said Klopp, who had been at Mainz as a player or coach since 1990. Labbadia said: "I'm very, very disappointed. We played a convincing game with good football. My team believed in themselves until the end and we should have made it 3-3, but we started at home with a bitter defeat and no points. That's bad."

Rutten on a roll
Fred Rutten had no such feelings after his first league game as coach of Dortmund's arch-rivals FC Schalke 04. The Dutchman had already seen his side win 3-0 against FC Homburg in the German Cup and 1-0 against Club Atlético de Madrid in UEFA Champions League qualifying before masterminding a 3-0 Bundesliga triumph against Hannover 96 in Gelsenkirchen. "The third match in a three-match-week is always the hardest, so it's great my team put in a performance like the one we produced today, said the man who earned FC Twente a UEFA Champions League third qualifying round berth last season. "But there is still a lot of work ahead for us. We have great expectations for this season."
