Overcoming the odds, Lebanese software gurus enter internet eminence

The world’s most popular internet applications, including Yahoo, Google, Facebook and YouTube, share several interesting characteristics. Nearly all were developed by students enrolled in American universities and nearly all were aided by an American venture capital injection to successfully enter the market. Lebanese-born Elie Khoury and Jad Younan have followed more or less the same path, yet with one major difference: they developed their Woopra program in Lebanon. Against all odds, some may argue, as the Land of the Cedars can hardly be described as an IT incubator.
Both Khoury and Younan graduated from the Lebanese American University in Byblos in 2007 with a degree in Computer Science and Computer Engineering, respectively. They spent many hours in class, but they spent many more nights working late on Woopra, a live tracking and analytics service that aims to send market leader Google Analytics into oblivion.

“When we felt the application was ready to be launched,” Khoury said, “we made the strategic decision to seek a partner who could help us with financing, marketing and the general business structure.” That partner became John Pozadzides, mainly because of his experience as director and vice president of the multinationals SAVVIS and Cable & Wireless.
It was said in Lebanon that the entrepreneurs had sold their brainchild for $5 million, yet Khoury rapidly dismissed that as a rumor. “We will not be selling Woopra at this early stage,” he said. “We are still the owners. I cannot enter into too many details at this moment, as the program has only just been launched. All I can say is that we have a very decent amount of funds, compared to other start-up projects like Facebook or YouTube.”

Woopra is a very advanced webstat utility, the best so far.
I am not gonna explain again, i have already written an article about it on my blog CLICK HERE
Vcoderz was the second website to have woopra on after ekhoury.com, and now there are more than 30.000 websites using woopra utility; this huge amount of websites would have been like 100 times bigger if they remove the approval restriction. But unforunately that's not possible for the time being especially that they're in beta mode.

مكّن العمل لنحو 17 ساعة يومياً الشابين اللبنانيين إيلي الخوري (23 سنة) وجاد يونان (24 سنة) من ابتكار الموقع الإلكتروني

الذي ثمنته منذ فترة قصيرة إحدى الشركات الأميركية بـ 18 مليون دولار أميركي. أراد الشابان من خلال الموقع إعطاء الفرصة لأصحاب المواقع الإلكترونية لمتابعة من يدخل إلى مواقعهم لحظة بلحظة، جنسيته، ماذا يتابع، ماذا يقرأ، ماذا يشتري عن الموقع. وكلّ ذلك مباشرة على خلاف موقع
«Google Analytics»
الذي يعطي معلومات عن زائري المواقع بعد 24 ساعة

بدأت الفكرة مع الخوري الذي تخصّص بالمعلوماتية في الجامعة اللّبنانيّة الأميركيّة

وعمل على بلورتها مع صديقه جاد يونان، الذي تخرّج من الجامعة عينها في اختصاص هندسة الكمبيوتر. وقد قدّم الخوري الفكرة في مشروع تخرجه، ثم تابع الصديقان العمل على تطويرها «كلّ من منزله»، كما يقولان، إلى أن قررا فتح مكتب خاص بهما. وتمكّنا بما جمعاه من مال وبمساعدة الأهل من تحقيق ذلك. يقول الخوري: «انقطعنا عن الناس وعملنا لنحو سنة ونصف سنة ورفضنا الوظائف التي عرضت علينا في تلك الفترة». وعندما قررا الخروج إلى العلن، كانت إمكاناتهما المالية ضعيفة وكلفة المشروع كبيرة «دبّرنا حالنا بكم

منذ اليوم الأول، أحدث الموقع ضجّة في الولايات المتحدة، وخصوصاً «أننّا دعونا مدونين معروفين فكتبوا عن الموقع وأسهموا في الترويج له». كان هدف الشابين الوصول إلى ثلاثة آلاف مشترك في الموقع خلال سنة، فوصلوا إلى هذا الرقم خلال أربعة أيام فقط، كما يؤكدان. ووصل عدد المشتركين اليوم في هذا الموقع الأول من نوعه إلى 60 ألف شخص

«بصراحة خفنا وفوجئنا وكنا بحاجة إلى مال لتحمل هذا العدد من المشتركين»، يوضح الخوري. ربما هذا النجاح الكبير الذي حقّقه الموقع دفع بالمستثمر الأميركي جون بوزادزيدس لأن يكون شريكاً في
«Woopra»
ويقدم بوزادزيدس اليوم كل ما يحتاج إليه المشروع من مال ويروّج الموقع في أميركا، حيث لكل شخص من أصل ثلاثة موقع خاص به

وتوجه الشابان إلى ولاية تكساس الأميركيّة في حزيران 2008 بعدما فشلا في إيجاد مستثمرين لبنانيين، وشاركا في مؤتمر في لاس فيغاس بحضور شريكهما وتعرّفا إلى المستثمرين وأسسّا شركة أميركيّة اسمها
«Fusion Labs»
يشرح الخوري «كان هدفي تحقيق مشروع يجعلني مليونيراً وكانت الفكرة واضحة في ذهني، توقّعت أن يثمّن بنحو أربعة ملايين دولار لا 18». أما يونان، فيرى أنّ «الوقت ليس الأنسب اليوم لبيع المشروع، لدينا المزيد لتطويره وزيادة قيمته».

ورغم غياب الاهتمام الرسمي اللبناني بالمشروع، عاد الشابان إلى لبنان وهما يسعيان إلى توظيف لبنانيين معهم لديهم خبرة في البرمجة على الإنترنت. ويبقى هدف الخوري «فتح مؤسسة تحضن كل من لديهم أفكار لتطويرها ومساعدتهم على تحقيقها وتشجعيهم على الابتكار»

يحلم إيلي الخوري بأن يكون لبنان أهم بلد في مجال الإنترنت في الشرق الأوسط، لأن مثل هذه المشاريع لا تحتاج إلى مال كثير وتستقطب زبائن من كل العالم وقادرة على إدخال أموال طائلة إلى البلد
