I think Cigarette prices should be raised like 2 or 3 times of its current price.
That will certainly reduce the shitty smell in every single corner as well as diseases and push some people to stop it for financial purposes. I mean food prices increase like hell which is a need and the shitty products like cigarette remain the same; if the government really wants to drag more income let them add more taxes on this kind of things and not basic needs like food.

The same pack that is sold in Lebanon for a dollar is sold for six dollars in the U.S. (at least in Michigan). There cigarettes are taxed by the federal government and taxed again by the state TWICE. The federal tax on cigarettes will go up to.
It is only natural. If you are a tobacco addict, just like a cocaine or heroine addict, we want to to make all the possible money that can be made out of you You don't like it, addict ? Quit....Higher taxes might compensate at least to all the spending every country has to suffer from because of smoking-related problems. Great thread...total support to the idea...and with no limits, the higher the better. 7$ for a pack of cigarette is a good start. |

In countries like US its not a big deal if the govt raised the cigarette prices, but in countries like Lebanon, the consequences would be big enough to cause some major troubles.
You see, in a country like US where the minimum wage is high enough, addicts will still be able to buy cigarettes. And by adding these taxes, the govt is trying to 1) have a benefit from the taxes, and 2) reduce the number of "new addicts". In a survey conducted some time ago, it was shown that more than 80% of cigarette addicts started their addiction before the age of 21. You realize that a 21- person who gets paid 8$ an hour (on average) or a 18- who still gets paid from his parents, wouldn't waste all this amount of money (7$ a pack) to start a new "bad" addiction. Whereas in a country like Lebanon, where the minimum wage is around 10 - 12$ a day, you realize what would happen to addicted people? The middle and rich class people wouldn't be affected, but the family with an income of 1000-$ a month would suffer. And I guess you know what nicotine withdrawal do in some people. They would go out of their mind. |

Humans haven't proved to be conscious enough at some points, and this is one of them. If such an act would push a lot of people towards the right decision of getting rid of their addiction, why not? |

thank god, i've been waiting for such thread ![]() well, yes, the government should raise the price of cigarettes in a way that people would still be able to buy it and that it makes profit out of it, so then the government can also lower the fuel prices on the other hand.i suggest also doubling the price of alcohol, it is too cheap in lebanon, isn't?
