March 14 proved the validity of my choices regarding Syria. General Aoun: No position will be imposed upon me and I will not nominate Hariri as Prime Minister.
Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun said in an interview with LBC television’s Marcel Ghanem on Thursday night that Our Voice cannot disappear because it is highly-inflicted. While the victims of my agenda are those who fear their conscious. Asked if he was under threat, he answered:” Of course, what's changed? They pick the person that can change the political equation” On the explosive device found near Kataeb party leader Amin Gemayel Bikfaya’s residence on Tuesday, the general said, “a hand grenade found in a car is not a big issue, but I will not make any comment before the investigation ends.” About the assassination of Kamal Medhat, he said that he does not know when it will be his turn in such planning, and he is preparing for such a thing. Such crime can happen at the moment when a person is resting assured, thus security measures are always ongoing. About the abduction of the citizen Joseph Sader in the area of influence of Hezbollah, ally of the Free Patriotic Movement, he said that he is neither the judicial commission of inquiry nor the official responsible for security in the country. We have officials and an intelligence authority that I question to no avail; the security forces did not answer neither the Sader family nor Lebanese public opinion; Therefore I ask the question again now, openly in front of the public. Aoun accussed the secret police service of "working against us." "Instead of uncovering crimes, they are in touch with elements accused of crimes," Aoun claimed. When asked about Hezbollah he said: “I do not have the authority of a judicial investigation committee, and I am not responsible for security in Lebanon. Therefore I am not supposed to request from Hezbollah clarification concerning the kidnapping of MEA employee Joseph Sader, but rather, the responsible authorities” Asked about the Lack of Quorum in Parliament today, He added that the people were accustomed to the quorum of MPs needed to pass laws not being met at parliamentary sessions, because the majority aimed to postpone or obstruct the discussion on some laws. He accused Prime Minister Fouad Siniora of fooling the Lebanese people when he warned against decreasing the tax on gasoline and fuel prices during yesterday’s parliament meeting. He also expressed his concerns about the pending administrative appointments that had no connection with the tradition of dividing them between political parties. "We need to be aware of the qualifications of the persons to be appointed. We should be briefed on the names of anyone to fulfill a position before the cabinet’s approval, because we have to gather information about them in order to make sure of their suitability” On his relationship with President Nabih Berri, General Aoun stressed to Ghanem that his speech did not aim to criticize Speaker Nabih Berri on a personal level but only the latter’s style. “Berri says that he is the ally of my ally, and I say the same thing because I don't wish to impose a different relationship on him," he went on to say. When asked about the Achrafieh district, He said Gen. Issam Abu Jamra is a candidate in Achrafieh, We cannot follow a political line that had margined Achrafieh," he explained, adding that the votes of Achrafieh had been "liberated from the occupiers" – March 14 Forces. He added: “According to the law of Ghazi Kanaan, the Christians are elected in four districts. Beirut, since 1972, has not had free elections, and when the martyr Gebran Tueni in 2004 called for the boycott of the municipality elections, I was against it, but he told me that Beirut had no voice... Now we have given Beirut it's voice back, so if the city wants to return to the way it used to be, she should do so in the elections. I hate to see the scenario of Tripoli, happening in Achrafieh....We saw a Sunni realignment during the Municipality election, while Christians did not vote. Thus they lost while the Sunnis won... I don’t want to scare anyone but this is the actual situation, and I am trying to put some immunity so no one commits errors. Achrafieh was liberated from a kind of occupation and has to chose in June 7. It was said in Doha, that what Aoun took by division we will take back by money; and without naming, the money did appear, and in a large amount, but it is not in the Ashrafieh citizen's best interest to accept it because by selling its decision, Achrafieh will be lost...We are against the actions of the Hariri movement that marginalized Achrafieh and other areas, and what I worked for was to improve the electoral representation, so let us at least keep the law that improved our representation, and work latter to get a better law, based on proportionality like I said before” He stressed on the fact that 99% of media reports on himself and his stances are not factual and warned against misleading the readers and the citizens. Gen Aoun was referring to the heavy campaign of propaganda by Lebanon's Harriri owned media. The general stressed that consensual democracy in Lebanon imposed partnership within the cabinet and accused the majority of running against him in the elections, especially since it was paying for Lebanese expatriates to come to Lebanon from the United States, Europe, Australia and Africa to vote, “while we cannot rent a airplane.” Aoun said the upcoming election is a "global battle," adding electors were "being brought in from all five continents to vote against me." And he believed a March 14 victory is a "loss" for Lebanon. The March 14 alliance considers Lebanon a company, and for that reason [the national] debt accumulated. We cannot continue the governing process this way. Did anyone ask MP Saad Hariri how is he going to resolve the debt issue?” Aoun asked. Aoun also said that Acting Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman’s speech earlier this week on defining US policy toward Lebanon according to who won the elections was clearly US intervention in domestic Lebanese affairs. “I received information that Washington warned Feltman and requested him to reduce his rhetoric in support of the March 14 alliance because the game surpasses them,” he said. Aoun added his bloc attempted to ratify an electoral law on the basis of proportionality and called for forming a new cabinet after the forthcoming parliamentary elections on the basis of proportionality, which would reflect proper representation within the parliament. The FPM leader also said his party had the sole authority to decide the names of its electoral candidates in the Jbeil district, and “it is enough for us not to chose any candidate against Hezbollah or the Amal Movement. He added that the FPM was likely to chose MP Abbas Hashem and noted that MP Walid Khoury’s candidacy was not yet confirmed. Stressing that President Michel Suleiman knew all the candidates in Jbeil but was not intervening in any electoral issues. On MP Michel al-Murr’s comment that Aoun was a Syrian symbol, he said, “I am a Lebanese symbol in Syria. Murr usually commits mistakes and regrets them later on, such as defeating [Kataeb party leader Amin] Gemayel in the Metn district,” a reference to FPM candidate Camille Khoury’s victory over the former president in 2007. Aoun assured that the Tashnak party is a friend "you will soon know his position"...Moreover, General Aoun refused to declare his position on whether he would back Berri for another term as parliament speaker. General Aoun added that the March 14 coalition was four years late in understanding regional developments and their repercussions on relations with Syria. Aoun, on the other hand, defended his alliance with Hezbollah, saying the Memorandum of Understanding had been established to avoid a civil war. "There was a risk that civil fighting might erupt. That's why I pursued a policy of understanding with Hezbollah to face up to isolation attempts by March 14 Forces,” He noted that Syria and Iran helped Lebanon during the 2006 July War and “we should thank them for that.”The Syrians say Siniora does not appreciate favors because he did not thank them for what they did during the war. They know him better than me,” he said. In response to a question on electricity cuts in North Lebanon that seem to occur when he goes to air, Aoun said, “Our voice will never disappear. My supporters can listen to me all the time and anywhere.” Finally, General Aoun said that he is not trying to have a Christian bloc, rather a big opposition community that anyone can join, stressing that Lebanon should be is a homeland for all the Lebanese, and that he has a new program that's fit to be a base that brings about a good socially minded citizen, who knows his rights. About the Free Patriotic Movement, I will not remove anyone but some members cannot reconcile between his party and his profession... The Free Patriotic Movement leader added that he would win at least 35 seats in the next parliament and emphasized that he is only talking about the members of the Change and Reform bloc,” I am not speaking about the entire opposition.” http://www.tayyar.org/Tayyar/News/Po...0067432209.htm |
