Arshavin hits four in epic Anfield encounter
Andrei Arshavin scored all four of Arsenal FC's goals as the UEFA Champions League contenders dealt Liverpool FC's title hopes a blow by drawing 4-4 in an absorbing Premier League encounter at Anfield. Kuyt assists Desperate for a pick-me-up following their FA Cup semi-final defeat by Chelsea FC on Saturday, Arsenal went ahead nine minutes before half-time when Arshavin fired Cesc Fābregas's cut-back in off the underside of the crossbar. Liverpool equalised four minutes after the break, Fernando Torres heading in Dirk Kuyt's cross, and were ahead just before the hour when Yossi Benayoun nodded in another delivery from Kuyt despite the best efforts of goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański. Arshavin haul Arshavin (67) drew Arsenal level when he seized on Alvaro Arbeloa's hesitancy on the edge of the penalty area to power a shot past Pepe Reina, and completed his hat-trick three minutes later when he punished a miscued clearance from Fábio Aurélio. The tempo was unrelenting and it was was not long before Liverpool levelled for a second time thanks to Torres's second of the night. With the game drifting into added time, Arshavin looked to have won it when he finished off a blistering counterattack led by Theo Walcott but, just when it looked like Arsčne Wenger's side would become the first team to win a Premier League game at Anfield this term, Benayoun fired in from close range. Wednesday matches The goal lifted Liverpool to the top of the table on goal difference above Manchester United FC, who play one of their two games in hand at home to Portsmouth FC on Wednesday. Third-placed Chelsea FC host fellow FA Cup finalists Everton FC in the night's other fixture.

Salomon Kalou has not ruled out Chelsea FC ending the season with a treble of trophies after the Blues defeated fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Arsenal FC 2-1 in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Saturday.
Exciting climax Guus Hiddink's team recovered from conceding Theo Walcott's early goal by levelling through Florent Malouda before the in-form Didier Drogba rounded goalkeeper Łukasz Fabiański and slotted in the winner with six minutes to play. That earned the west Londoners a ninth FA Cup final appearance, against an Everton FC side they will also meet at Stamford Bridge tonight in a dress rehearsal for the 30 May showpiece. Before that date, however, Kalou and Co will attempt to overhaul Manchester United FC's four-point advantage at the Premier League summit and reach the final of Europe's premier club competition in Rome on 27 May. Treble chance To achieve the latter goal, Chelsea have the unenviable task of beating FC Barcelona over two legs in the last four, but for Kalou "everything is possible". "As long as there are games and we keep winning then there is a possibility of winning all three," the Ivory Coast striker told uefa.com. "We have to keep doing what we are doing by working hard as a team and I think we can achieve that." 'Beat anybody' Having eliminated Liverpool FC in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and dashed Arsenal's hopes of a first domestic trophy since the 2005 FA Cup, the 23-year-old is savouring the prospect of tackling the Spanish Liga pacesetters. "It will be a good game," he added. "We have played Liverpool, Arsenal and then it's Barcelona in a couple of weeks; these are the types of games everyone wants to play in. We have to go there [to Barcelona, for the first leg on 28 April] and make the job possible. It's going to be a really hard game but we have the team to beat anyone." United rematch? Should Chelsea progress to a second successive European final, Kalou would love to face United and atone for last season's agonising 6-5 loss to the Red Devils on penalties in Moscow. "We could even play Manchester United again," said Kalou, scorer of a Chelsea spot-kick in that shoot-out. "They are always there and we are too, so we are always going to meet. They are playing really well and are strong, but I think Chelsea are back at the top level so it would be good to play them." |
