Four-goal Arshavin unable to sleep

His every shot may have rustled the net on an incredible night at Anfield, but Arsenal FC forward Andrei Arshavin was unable to score even a wink of sleep after his four-goal burst at Liverpool FC, according to his mother Tatyana.
'Bright future'
The Russian international put his side in front on three occasions during Tuesday's pulsating 4-4 draw, including a last-minute breakaway effort that looked to have won the game until Yossi Benayoun's stoppage-time equaliser for the Premier League leaders. Despite that late blow, however, Arshavin could pride himself on being the first player to register four goals in a league match at Anfield in more than 60 years. "I spoke with him this morning, when it was only seven [o'clock] in London," Tatyana told uefa.com. "He couldn't get to sleep after such a tense battle where the pressure was very high. I really like the fact the Arsenal team kept on attacking after his goals. I believe they will have bright future with Arshavin."
Emotional night
A January signing from UEFA Cup holders FC Zenit St. Petersburg, the 27-year-old had already brought fresh energy to Arsčne Wenger's side before Tuesday's outing, including goalscoring performances against Wigan Athletic FC and Blackburn Rovers FC. Indeed, his impact has been felt far beyond north London. "I watch all Andrei's matches," his mother added. "It was after midnight in Russia when Andrei was scoring, but I did not try to hide my emotions. However, the neighbours understand and I think they've got used to my emotions."
'Nothing unexpected'
For Zenit coach Dick Advocaat, meanwhile, his former pupil's contribution was typical of the talent he displayed consistently before his transfer. "For me, there was nothing unexpected as I knew Andrei was an exceptional player," said the Dutchman, who also followed the game on television. "I told everybody that – including people in England – even before he started playing there."
New-found motivation
Before Tuesday's match, which took the Gunners eight points clear of fifth-placed Aston Villa FC in the race for England's fourth UEFA Champions League berth, only one other Russian had plundered a hat-trick in English football. That was former Manchester United FC winger Andrei Kanchelskis in a derby against Manchester City FC on 10 November 1994. "I expected this kind of level," continued Advocaat. "Arshavin has a [strong] mentality, but you cannot do special things on the pitch without the right motivation and he has found this in England. He showed yesterday what he can bring to the team."

Defensive concerns mount for United

Manchester United FC's defensive injury curse has struck again after the club confirmed right-backs Gary Neville and John O'Shea will be sidelined "for weeks" after hobbling out of Wednesday's 2-0 Premier League victory over Portsmouth FC.
Ferdinand rested
Neville lasted just 13 minutes at Old Trafford before being forced off with a right foot problem, and his replacement, O'Shea, fared little better as he made way for Rafael soon after half-time. "They're going to be out for weeks and that's a disappointment," said Sir Alex Ferguson, who was at least able to allay fears over Rio Ferdinand after the centre-back was left out against Portsmouth. "The fact Rio had played extra time [in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final defeat by Everton FC] after only just coming back from two or three weeks out meant it was too big a risk," said Sir Alex. "There was nothing wrong with his groin, it was just tiredness."
Problem position
That will be some comfort for United but the right-back position remains problematic, with the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final against Arsenal FC looming on 29 April. Rafael has himself only recently returned from an ankle injury, while last season's first choice right-back Wes Brown has been unavailable for most of the campaign because of a problem with his ankle. He did, however, play an hour for United's reserves against Preston North End FC on Monday. The win against Portsmouth restored United to the Premier League summit, with the Red Devils three points above Liverpool FC with a game in hand.

Manchester United FC scored five second-half goals against Tottenham Hotspur FC as they recovered from 2-0 down to beat the Londoners 5-2 and re-establish their three-point advanage over Liverpool FC at the Premier League summit.
Second-half display
Darren Bent (29) and Luka Modrić (32) deservedly gave the visitors a lead to take into the break and, at that point, few inside Old Trafford would have envisaged what was to come. Cristiano Ronaldo's 57th-minute penalty halved the deficit and Wayne Rooney (67) levelled with the first of three goals in four minutes, the pair each adding second strikes. Dimitar Berbatov struck a fifth eleven minutes from time. United, who host Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday, still have a game in hand on Liverpool, who went top on goal difference earlier in the day with a 3-1 victory at Hull City AFC.
Kuyt double
Xabi Alonso (45) and Dirk Kuyt (63) put Liverpool in control either side of a straight red card for Hull striker Caleb Folan just before the hour. The hosts reduced their arrears through Geovanni (72) only for Kuyt to extinguish any hopes of a Hull fightback a minute from time.
Penalty save
Chelsea FC warmed up for the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final with FC Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Tuesday with a narrow victory at West Ham United FC. Salomon Kalou scored the only goal ten minutes after half-time for the Blues, who had Petr Čech to thank for saving Mark Noble's 70th-minute penalty. Chelsea's FA Cup final opponents Everton FC lost 2-1 at home to Manchester City FC.
West Brom win
Elsewhere, Aston Villa FC drew 1-1 at Bolton Wanderers FC, while Fulham FC moved into seventh courtesy of a 1-0 victory against Stoke City FC. In the day's other game, bottom side West Bromwich Albion FC enjoyed a 3-0 home victory against Sunderland AFC but remain six points shy of safety.
