El Marada leader Sleiman Frangieh

In an interview with NTV television, El Marada Movement leader Sleiman Frangieh stated that he is "set to reclaim 70% of voters' support in Zgharta-Zawyi due to the mutual respect we have with voters."

Frangieh revealed that President Michel Suleiman has sent him General Wafiq Jezzini more than once to advise him that the president wishes to get his share of MPs in Kesrouan, Jbeil and al-Metn electorates. Frangieh said that he responded by conveying to President Suleiman that those he is backing as candidates are nothing else but March 14 members and therefore Suleiman pulled out his support to those candidates such as Mansour al-Bon, Michel Murr and Francois Bassil.

Frangieh indicated that the Caza Law of 1960 has ensured that the Christians are allowed to elect at least 55 MPs as their representatives and thus General Michel Aoun ensured that his allies coordinate with him when selecting their Christian candidates.

The Marada leader stated that he has full confidence in his position and he is the one who decided to join the Change and Reform parliamentary bloc after the elections, noting that General Michel Aoun managed to convince the Christians in a few months in what "we failed to do in twenty years and that is Lebanon is Arabic and has her interests in the Arabic East." He declared that being in one Christian bloc would help achieve a lot more than being in separate blocs.

"My ambition in politics to see the people embrace my political and national thoughts and convictions," Frangieh said, adding that he probably would not run for parliament in four years time.

With regard to his electoral opponents in Zgharta-Zawyi, Frangieh reaffirmed that he would respect the results that stem from the voters' choice and would congratulate them if they are chosen by voters. the Zghartwaien stalwart called on his opponent to accept election results and bear their responsibilities and not run away from them.

"We seek to win over most people, but although we welcome their participation, we have not paid a dollar to lure expatriates," Frangieh affirmed.

The Marada leader asserted that he is committed to the opposition and is backing all of the opposition candidates across Lebanon, saying that it is necessary that all of them coordinate with one another to record better results.

"We see the role of any opposition as constructive and we believe that all political parties must participate in government because Lebanon needs everyone to move forward," Frangieh said.

In relation to the Tripoli electorate, Frangieh confirmed his support for former PM Omar Karami regardless of whether he includes the Marada candidate Rafli Diab on his list or not. He indicated that between the Kataeb candidate Samer Saadeh and Jean Obeid, he would definitely vote in favour of Obeid.

When asked about becoming a minister in the next cabinet, Frangieh said that he is not eager to hold a ministerial post, but hinted that if the cabinet is going to be a national consensus government consisting of bloc leaders then he might join such government.

As far as the Christian reconciliation is concerned, Frangieh stressed that the real reconciliation takes place after elections and not before, adding that regardless of the election results "we extend our hand and declare we have overcome the past."
