Salamanca Player Miguel Garcia Suffers Heart Attack During Segunda Division Match


Salamanca midfielder Miguel Garcia is recovering in hospital today after suffering a heart attack during his side’s Segunda Division match versus Real Betis on Sunday afternoon.

The 31-year-old collapsed on the pitch after 61 minutes of play, and the medical team that attended to him were forced to revive him on the field before the emergency services arrived onto the scene. It took the doctors on the scene more than five minutes to bring him back to consciousness.

Mercifully, Garcia is now in a stable condition in hospital, as further tests are undertaken to determine his overall health in the wake of the incident, which has become all too common in Spanish football in recent seasons.

Former Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta and Espanyol’s Daniel Jarque have both suffered fatal heart attacks, while Real Madrid midfielder Ruben de la Red, along with current Sevilla defender Sergio Sanchez, were struck down in similar circumstances, and have yet to return to action.

Salamanca chief medic, Dr. Garrett, commented on the incident: “When you find a person in this state for so long, it is the worst thing that can happen to you in this life and in this profession, but it is one that we have studied and it needs to be addressed.”

Thankfully, the quick-thinking of the medical staff at the stadium have averted another tragic incident in Spanish football.
