طرح عدد من العلماء فكرة الاستفادة من قدرة الدخان المنبعث من انفجار البراكين لحجب نور الشمس في إطار السعي لإيجاد حل سريع لأزمة الاحتباس الحراري التي بدأت تتسبب بكوارث على كوكب الأرض وذلك من خلال مدخنة خاصة تقوم بضخ مواد كيماوية مماثلة لذلك الدخان إلى طبقات الفضاء العليا.
وذكر موقع "سي ان ان" الالكتروني أن علماء في مركز ناثان مارفولد للأبحاث يقومون بإعداد خطة لبناء مدخنة يصل ارتفاعها إلى 25 كيلومترا يمكن حملها عبر مناطيد عملاقة إلى طبقة الستراتوسفير قادرة على ضخ ثاني أوكسيد الكبريت.
