I also mentioned luck... genetics is luck too. but the fittest is perhaps societies not individuals... a person's society has a great influence on them
edit: the fact remains the hungry people and the dying people did not change the world in any way... they will always exist. and I do pity them, just as I pity all the hungry and sick animals dying and all the other living things... but misery will always exist. mourning the famine in sumal and all the pics on facebook didn't feed anyone so what difference does it make what anyone feels if pitty or not? if I cry about famine would it make anyone better?

internet d!cks worldwide can stop putting pictures of the poor and hungry next to steve jobs', and can start actually be much more meaningful by saying that the money spent on storing nuclear weapons (yes, STORING ONLY) every year can turn earth into heaven. so dear internet d!cks, you most probably own an apple product, shift you hate away and make more sense. shame on you.

I sometimes wonder if he protests for the sake of protesting or he really believes in what he says...

Getting sensitive as usual. I learned that generally people who learn a bit about modern technology in this forum (and in Lebanon in general) suddenly become cocky and act condescending. Most people who are getting abuses for criticizing the Steve Job's exaltation DID NOT EVEN ATTACK him, which is one of the most crucial points concerning the subject. They are attacking the phenomena of extolling him ( him as a human not even his work ) which is theoretically absurd and nonsensical. The whole point is that while you're busy exalting some dude that lived affluently in his life, people who are not hypocrites actually prefer to look at the world in a more "realistic" way if you like to put it and prefer to look at how the world is systematically run rather than what it has to offer you personally. as for the bolded part, it's very shallow. Why don't you also go call the workers in Apple Industry who make a living from Apple ( even if minimal) silly if they don't want to praise mighty Steve jobs since you think he's providing work for them and they should be grateful for him ... when in reality that aspect didn't even occur to him or anyone in the apple industry directors. Also, let me just tell you that even 2,000-3,000 years ago even though countries weren't even civilized and so people faced a lot of pain in their lives and yet hapiness was still prevalent at that time and there was adequate amount of amusement and they did not feel like they lacked anything. New products are not really "holy" and sacred. They actually create new tastes and encourage bigger appetites which if not satiated will cause more pain to the person than that which he experienced when these products never existed to begin with. |

if you're talking about the people who owned slaves and fought gladiators and watched them kill each other for their amusement then yes they were happier than us. because none of us own a human slave
we are less happy because we have to settle for an electronic slave also I don't think the slaves were happier then than we are now...

No ... I am talking about their natural desires and appetites. If you are interested in the subject, take a more moderate human with no killing desires as an example or to make it easier compare it to later eras were there was proper civilization but technology was more controllable and even better compare it to a society were freedom does not entail technological exploitation. |

you don't see how horrible living years ago was. assume the average person as you said, there was no cure for fever or plagues or vaccines, the average person used to have at least one of his children die from a disease or an accident before hitting puberty women had no rights(speaking about europe not saudi arabia ) the stuff you see in movies(like robbin hood) are not true at all

You still didn't get down to the point that I tried to present. There are two things you need to take into consideration. First: there are states like the Marxist states in 1960's-1970's at their very peak where quality of life was very good despite having shitty housing, etc compared to our days today. I took the Marxist states as an example especially in 1960's-1970's because they generally were "civilized" in the sense that you intend, and you won't recall the oppression people face when you take into consideration that they weren't gadget slaves. Women for instance had more rights than even Europe has TODAY since you're mentioning Europe. Moreover there was development in the sense but it was controllable and it was not done unreasonably like the gadget products of nowadays. I think this is a good example because you were mixing living natural life with the oppression and violation of human rights that coincided with them when in fact you should have drawn a line between them so I wouldn't have had to present to you the example of Marxist societies which I did not want to do. Second thing I am bewildered that you talk about people suffering when in fact people still die of disease every day and the biggest population in the world can not even benefit of your so-called medical development added to them being unable to satiate these several new appetites in the world today which makes things even worse for them. You are still considering these people collateral damage and moreover, you are still measuring quality of life by death or life whereas it also extends to more serious matters like psychological well-being and "happiness". |
