Intro

The Knights of the Ku Klux Klan was founded in Louisiana in 1956 and boasts David Duke as it's first national director! Pastor Thomas Robb, national director of The Knights Party, was invited by David Duke to speak at large Klan rallies across the nation in the early eighties. Mr. Robb was already a well known public speaker and David Duke was interested in having only the most influential of speakers stand up on behalf of the white rights cause.

David Duke, who shocked the liberal establishment by getting elected as state representative in Louisiana and later receiving over 700,000 votes in his bid for governor, rocked the nation when he began allowing media access to public Klan rallies and appeared on numerous talk shows around the nation including the Tom Snyder show. He transformed the Klan from a small regional group into a nationwide organization and was the first to effectively make use of the media. Pastor Thomas Robb served as national chaplain and eventually served as national organizer and editor of the White Patriot newspaper. In 1989, after 10 years of loyal service to the national office and after many more years than that in the movement over all, he became the national director and implemented modern concepts of mass marketing reaching hundreds of thousands of white Christian people around the world with the message of Christian Revival.

It has long been the belief of Pastor Robb that the Klan needed to get back into the political scene. He believed that white people were being divided by the Republicans and Democrats. In 2002, The Knights Party was officially recognized. It is working to build a nationwide grass roots movement of White Christian men, women, and children who support a return of White Christians to government.

Under the leadership of Thomas Robb, associates and supporters nationwide can work through a coordinated effort to move The Knights Party to center stage of American politics. We must make our voice heard and get behind National Director Thomas Robb's dream of providing a future for our children and our white brothers and sisters everywhere.

Goal

The time in which we live is very exciting and any like minded individual would be proud to be an associate or supporter of this grass-roots movement to take back America. The Knights Party, will in the years to come, become recognized by the American people as THE WHITE RIGHTS MOVEMENT! Where ever they live, whatever their personal religious denomination may be, no matter what present political or fraternal organization they may be with, everyone should support The Knights Party as the political PARTY of the future and the Last Hope for America. The Knights Party, realizing that to achieve true security for our people we must achieve political power in the United States, will:

A. Become the leader of the White racialist movement

Through a strong organized show of leadership

Through the training and use of qualified media representatives

Through a concerted effort of all Klansmen and Klanswomen to carefully follow instructions, suggestions, and guidelines as set by headquarters and to continually strive to be THE BEST

B. Strive to become the representative and driving force behind the White Community

Through an aggressive use of television, radio, and print advertising

Through huge nationwide literature drives in which millions of people are reached with our literature.

To legally break through the liberal wall that surrounds America's colleges and universities - to reach and instruct students in the reclaiming of their schools.

Through the effective use of project committees to assist in the re-education of law enforcement agencies and the educational establishment. These two very important groups must be given another side of the story instead of only receiving information from organizations such as the ADL, NAACP, or ACLU

C. Organize and direct white people to a level of activism necessary to bring about a political victory.

Through the organizing and maintenance of strong local units.

Through bold public relations campaigns focusing on two main ideas:

The White Christian people have been betrayed by our nations political, economic, educational, and religious leaders

The Knights Party is the last hope for America.

Through the aggressive and combined effort of Knights' units (The core of the grassroots movement) to work within their community in all aspects of a political campaign, including but not limited to:

Getting literature into the hands of everyone in the community.

Keeping the name "The Knights Party" in continual high profile.

Sponsoring ads in local newspapers and on local radio and television networks.

Working on petition drives to achieve ballot access for Klansmen or Klanswomen who run for either local, state, or federal offices; such as school board, mayor, state representative, congress, senate, etc.

Conducting community goodwill projects.

Organizing and working on "get to the polls" campaigns, to insure that everyone who will vote in our favor can have the opportunity to do so.

Recruiting new associates and volunteers for The Knights Party who will work toward the election of Klansmen and Klanswomen to public office.

We must take back control of OUR U.S. government. We intend to put Klansmen and Klanswomen in office all the way from the local school board to the White House!

Why does the Ku Klux Klan burn crosses when they claim to be such gung-ho Christians? I've heard this comes from a Scottish ritual of some sort, but I shudder to think that a downhome American tradition like the Klan has actually been a subversive plot by wily Scotsmen. --Anonymous, Madison, Wisconsin

The Scottish apparently originated cross-burning, but it was your friends in the mass media who helped sell the idea to the KKK--media being somewhat broadly construed here to include novelists and filmmakers. You think media complicity in the more disreputable aspects of pop culture is a recent phenomenon? Uh-uh. Try 1810.
Eighteen-ten was the year the Scottish romantic writer Sir Walter Scott, a great admirer of ancient Scottish traditions, first brought the "fiery cross" to modern attention in his poem The Lady of the Lake. In the poem the cross is set ablaze on the hilltops to summon the Scottish clans. Scott's work was especially popular in the American south, where much of the populace was of Scotch-Irish extraction.
The original Ku Klux Klan, which was founded in 1866 and disbanded in the early 1870s, didn't burn crosses, but that didn't stop author Thomas Dixon from saying they did in his pro-KKK novel The Clansman (1905). "The Fiery Cross of old Scotland's hills!" a character in the book announces. "In olden times when the Chieftain of our people summoned the clan on an errand of life and death, the Fiery Cross, extinguished in sacrificial blood, was sent by swift courier from village to village."
Though it had done well enough on its own, The Clansman didn't become a national phenomenon until Dixon sold the movie rights to the pioneer filmmaker D.W. Griffith, who used it to make his groundbreaking film The Birth of a Nation. In a dramatic scene, the movie's hero rears up his horse and brandishes a flaming cross to summon the Klans to drive out the black oppressors (!) and their northern white allies who controlled the south during Reconstruction. Meanwhile the movie theater's orchestra (remember, this was the silent era) struck up Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries." Southern white audiences generally when nuts at this point, clapping and cheering.
Knowing a good idea when he saw one, William J. Simmons, the founder of the Klan in its second incarnation (1915-1944), cobbled together a cross and burned it at a meeting of the newly-established Knights of the Ku Klux Klan on Thanksgiving night, 1915, on Stone Mountain near Atlanta. Flaming crosses have been a Klan trademark ever since.
Just one problem. The fiery cross of Scottish legend wasn't the upright Roman cross commonly used by the Klan. Rather it was the X-shaped cross of St. Andrew. St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland, and an X-shaped cross probably also was a lot easier to make a signal bonfire out of. But nobody ever said the Klan's big attraction was its meticulous sense of detail.
Where does the name Ku Klux Klan come from? It seems the men who founded the original Klan were tossing out ideas for a name when somebody came up with kukloi, plural of the Greek kuklos, circle. Somebody else had the bright idea of twisting kuklos into Ku Klux. Klan was added later for alliteration, and they spelled it with a K rather than a C so as not to confuse the rank and file.


BURNING ISSUES
I just read your column on the Scottish origin of cross burning by the Ku Klux Klan and would like to make a few clarifications. While I do not believe it was your intention, your article seems to imply that Scots were a bunch of bloodthirsty cross-burners. This is not the case at all. The flames were never doused in "sacrificial blood"; rather, each family representative would cast a torch into the fire to announce they had arrived. The flames went out on their own when the timbers had been consumed. This tradition is still performed at the Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina, Scottish Festival every July.
Granted, people of Scottish and Irish descent settled mostly in the southern United States, which explains much of the violence in the history of that region (see Celtic Origins in Southern Violence, Dr. John Pancake, University of Alabama). However, I can assure you that there is not now, nor has there ever been any connection between the highland clans of Scotland and the KKK. --William Speir, Jr., Plano, Texas
