The DNS Backbone DDoS Attacks have been several significant Internet events in which distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) have targeted one or more of the thirteen DNS root servers. These attacks are extremely significant, as the root nameservers function as the Internet backbone, translating text-based Internet hostnames into IP addresses. As the nameservers provide this service for DNS lookups worldwide, attacks against the root nameservers are attempts to disable the Internet itself, rather than specific websites.

October 22, 2002

The first attack occurred on October 22, 2002, and lasted for approximately one hour. Of the thirteen servers, nine were disabled but the remaining four were able to cope.

This event was the first significant attack directed at trying to disable the Internet itself, instead of specific websites. The largest malfunction of the DNS servers before this event were seven machines in July 1997, due to a technical problem.

February 6, 2007

A second attack occurred on February 6, 2007. The attack began at 10:30 UTC, and lasted about five hours. Although none of the servers crashed, two of the root servers reportedly "suffered badly", while others saw "heavy traffic". The botnet responsible for the attack has reportedly been traced to South Korea.

On February 8, 2007 it was announced by Network World that "If the United States found itself under a major cyberattack aimed at undermining the nation’s critical information infrastructure, the Department of Defense is prepared, based on the authority of the president, to launch a cyber counterattack or an actual bombing of an attack source." This is likely due to one of the DNS root servers being under the control of the United States Department of Defense.

DDoS attacks happened recently on vcoderz.com, we all got annoyed and the admins did what they could to stop/respond to it.

While vcoderz is a tiny community in the huge web, the US and other countries have a huge dependency on the web and stopping the internet will not please them a lot.

If you had the will/power of the US will you do the same thing?? do you think launching a war based on a cyber attack is normal??

Cyber wars are now a part of every war and we saw this during the summer bass they are usualy a result of the war fought on a different front, do you think they will ever turn to being the cause of wars?!

huge attacks are so hard to launch, because the attack is done through a huge number of computers (so this is why only 2 major attacks are on wikipedia)
in the mean while small attacks are easy to launch. DoSing a small site is not hard, what makes any normal size website vulnerable to an attack at any time.

a huge cyber attack is so annoying, imagine shutting down the internet for example! and it causes dramatic losses, so seeing the usa lauching an attack based on that is a bit normal to people who knows a bit in the computer world.
As the wars causes cyber attacks, the vice versa process might not be far.

Actually there are huge things related to internet other than browsing - chatting...
There is also huge amounts of money that are stransfered daily via internet especially in the united states and europe and can cause disasters if they stop for few hours or let's say days.
I am with a cyber counter attack and to put more strict laws especially international ones about these subjects but of course not a real war unless it becomes clear that it's a start of an attack that will switch to another sectors as well then i find it normal to the u.s to defend itself same for any other country.
