A quick review to the history :
- in feb 1958 the union between syria and egypt occured after agreement of both countries to form what's called "the united arabic republic"
- Effect of this union on USA:
USA was against this union, because such union will give power to the arabs to face israel and this represents a threat for her ... so it was against USA benefit in the region to form this union ...
- Effect of this union on lebanon:
There were 2 voices :
* - the opposition which welcomed such union
* - and the president of Lebanon "Kamil Chamoun" - allie of usa - who was against this union ...

the relation between chamoun and usa was very strong since lebanon and jordan during that era were the only ones who had the greatest relations with USA, and USA did its best so that her power in lebanon remains (kind of similar to what's happening today) ...

I even read that the representative of the head of the american intelligence in beirut back then "welber evland" said "we bought the lebanese parlament for chamoun" ... in order to extend the presidency of chamoun to another era ...

The opposition refused the american intervention in lebanon and revolt on chamoun who seeked the american help who hesitated at first, but then after the revolution in Iraq on July 58, USA felt her position was in danger coz the Soviet Union welcomed the iraqi revolution, so the next day USA sent her navy troops and marinz to lebanon as Britain did in Jordan to move from there to Iraq ...

Such movement was opposed by Jamal Abdel El Nasser backed by the lebanese opposition ... USA claimed as usual that her troops were to protect the democracy in Lebanon ...

But after the pressure from the international community and arabic countries through Jamal Abdel Nasser ... and after seeing that the popularity of chamoun has decreased in Lebanon ... she sent Murphy to lebanon and backed the election of new president other than chamoun who was "Fouad Chhab" who was welcomed by Jamal Abdel Nasser and fater few months from his election USA withdrawn from Lebanon ...

and in 1959 Jamal abd el nasser and Fouad Chhab made an agreement "ميثاق شرف" between the 2 countries were lebanon support politically and diplomatically the arabic union and abd el nasser support the common security ...

eno i can understand why some lebanese hate Jamal Abdel Nasser mainly "7ezeb el wataniyyin el a7rar" ... but concerning fou2ad chhab era, lebanon had the best relation with ... and Jamal Abd el nasser wasn't a threat for him, so i don't see how he wanted to destroy that era ...
