Fabio Capello has revealed that he has still not had any contact from the English Football Association over the country’s vacant manager’s job. Former Real Madrid boss Capello is the current bookmaker’s favourite to replace Steve McClaren, who was sacked last Thursday following England’s embarrassing failure to qualify for Euro 2008. “There has been no contact with the English federation,” Capello stated on RAI television’s ‘Domenica Sportiva’ show last night. The 61-year-old has been one of the few high-profile candidates to express an interest in the job. “Just like Spain, England have some great players, but their national teams never win anything,” Capello continued. “Could Gianfranco Zola be my assistant? It could be an interesting partnership but I know nothing of this. “What about Beckham? He was one of the players that helped me to win the league [with Real Madrid last season] and he is a good player.” Recent reports in the British press have speculated that if Capello was offered the job, it is likely that an English and Italian-speaking figure such as Zola or David Platt would be appointed as his assistant.
