Default Latency VS bandwidth

Most people are so concerned about their connection bandwidth and most of them have no idea of the importance of latency and how it would affect them.

I have two internet connections at home:
  1. Main connection of 512kbps and ~400ms latency
  2. Backup / Shell usage connection of 190ms and ~170ms latency
Shell, IM, Browsing except downloading and streaming the backup connection beats the hell out of the main connection.

I opened this thread to make people ask their providers about the latency they have or simply test it by themselves by pinging several domains / servers such as google.com for example and get concerned more about that part since regular users have too much browsing and IM usage and few online gaming.

I will make a video recording and show you the difference =)

the definition of broadband is high speed low latency, if any of these fails, the internet will be slow. high speed high latency is good for downloading large files.
low latency is good for gaming, chat, voice, video, and online apps, as well as backup and shell usage (mentioned by xcoder).

but the latency affects download speed right?
I mean when you are downloading from megaupload and rapidshare and these sites that give you only one download stream(and they do not support download managers) I notice that when downloading from these sites, my task manager shows that the network signals are triangular instead of being a straight line on the actualy bandwith I have
but when downloading a movie from facebook for example, it's a straight line

It does affect when you have lost packets caused by high latency and connection time outs and stuff like that, it consumes additional time to get those again.
Just notice when you have low latency download starts and boost up immediately. Just like browsing, even if you have big bandwidth open any wesbite for example and look down the taskbar "connecting, connected, waiting domain..." with lower latency it's done faster. So basically latency affects everything but stuff more than others.
