Well I think it depends who this someone is. If that person is really important to you, then you should share everything. Even things that you are ashamed of.
The main reason is that you do not want that person to discover these "hidden" things and know that you are hiding. Not to mention that keeping the past to yourself will limit the knowledge of that person. Your past contributed to the person you currently are. So a person who truly cares about you has to know every step that made YOU, thus your past.
In my case, I share my past with my loved one as I expect her to share hers.

I have t really disagree about the sentence: "just tell them what you feel they need to know"
You are deciding what that person needs to know, what if he cares more than you know? I believe that you are in a way taking decisions on his behalf.
This is truly a relationship limiter-breaker. The relation cannot really go further until you learn to truly share yourself and feelings with the other person and to accept his opinions.

There are always some stuff that remain as ur darkest secrets or stuff no one should know about for your own gd and for that other one. so i only share with the one i truly trust the basic stuff about my past, other than that they dont have to know anythin..

a basic silly e.g.: a cheating husband won't tell his wife that he cheated on her years ago, right ??

and looking back to the past, whether it was gr8 or awful will change nuth u will always remember ur past as ur life experience in bad and gd times
