You got lot of indexing systems in your OS that gets too big by time + the platform gets heavier every time you install a new application on it.
That's why i asked about the fresh installation =)

of course a fresh installation is fast, but we noticed the speed difference really quick. and in some tasks (such as changing the IP) it is much faster than XP or Vista.

By the way, I did not format/install, I didn't lose most of the drivers and applications.

Windows Vista used to consume around 50% RAM Memory at start up, without running any application {of course the Antivirus and all the start up applications are not included }
Windows 7 now uses only 24% at started That's a huge difference, although I got 4 GB RAM, but both windows I'm talking about are x64bit.

Games the newest, Programs like matlab autocad solidworks mathematica everything walla atcheh it;s veeeeeerrrrrry smooth it;s a turbo OS. the other positive thing is that the explorer not responding problem used to occur alot in vista and moderatly in xp, here on win7 it occurs rarely like once exery 2 or 3 weeks knowing that my pc stays on for a minimum of 15 hours a day.
Now of course my current pc helps alot since it;s a very fast one ( corei7 920, 4GB DDR3, DX58SO, 295GTX, Thermaltake case, 1TB HD) but i've seen it on different configurations and still the bottom line is that win7 works like a charm

I just created a small Java Application that saves the current time of the system in milliseconds in a file. It takes it less than a second to do that obviously.

So what I did was, run the program, then directly restart the computer, and when the windows launched, I ran the program another time, and finally when all the start up applications loaded I ran it again.

I calculated the differences, the delay is 120 seconds from restart to login, 150 seconds from restart to full boot.
Now my laptop got humble hardware, Core2Duo 1.83GHz, 4GB Ram. Other computers would make better timings I'm sure

i clicked on restart, after 7 seconds, the screen gave me: no input display.
the overall restart time was 54 seconds (including the 7 seconds, and the boot of some apps).

ok, specs: 3.0ghz core 2 duo, seagate barracuda 500gb hard disk, 4gb of ram (this is all what matters)
edit: i think my PC beats morpheousp's in a boot matchup
